I posted this some years ago and came across it again today. I had to share it again.

What an inspirational woman and an extraordinary story.

A beautiful reminder that one person, one decision and one small action can eventually create enormous change.

Definitely worth watching again.

What South Africa Can Learn without Trying to Copy China

The most valuable lesson from my visit is not that South Africa should try to copy China. Every country has its own history, culture, strengths and challenges. A system that works in one context cannot simply be transferred into another without careful thought but we can still learn from what we observe.

Some principles are broader than any single country:
- Shared purpose.
- Long-term thinking.
- Personal responsibility.
- Disciplined ex*****on.
- Investment in infrastructure and people.
- Commitment to the common good.

Learning does not require imitation, it requires curiosity, discernment and the willingness to ask what could be applied responsibly within our own context.

The goal is not to become someone else, it is to become more intentional about what we are building together.

Transformation Starts Below the Surface

When we look at transformation, we often focus on visible outcomes.
- Growth.
- Performance.
- Infrastructure.
- Technology.
- Profitability.
- Efficiency.

But visible results are supported by less visible foundations.
- Purpose.
- Mindset.
- Values.
- Discipline.
- Responsibility.
- Trust.
- Consistent behaviour.

This is the principle behind my Tree of Transformation model.

The strength of the visible tree depends on the health of its roots.

Organisations frequently try to improve the branches without examining what is happening beneath the surface. They change structures, systems or strategies while leaving the underlying culture and patterns untouched.

Lasting transformation begins within people before it becomes visible in teams, organisations and communities.

What is happening beneath the surface in your organisation?

One of the things I observed in China was a strong sense of collective order.

Public transport, shared spaces, queues and everyday systems appeared to depend on people understanding that their behaviour affects others.

This raises an important leadership question:
How do we balance personal ambition with responsibility toward the team, organisation or community?

Individual initiative matters.

We need people who think independently, create opportunities and take ownership, but individual success becomes destructive when it consistently comes at the expense of the whole.

Healthy leadership creates space for both.

People are encouraged to grow, contribute and succeed, while also understanding their responsibility toward others. The strongest teams do not suppress individual strength, they align it with a shared purpose.

Ordinary Actions, Extraordinary Outcomes

Extraordinary organisations are not built by extraordinary leaders alone, they are built by ordinary people who consistently:
- Keep their commitments.
- Take responsibility.
- Respect shared spaces.
- Solve problems.
- Support the team.
- Learn from mistakes.
- Do their work with care.

Much of what creates a strong culture is not dramatic. It happens quietly, repeatedly and often without recognition.

Leadership matters because leaders influence which behaviours are encouraged, rewarded and tolerated. Culture then becomes the accumulation of those repeated behaviours. Extraordinary outcomes often begin with ordinary actions performed consistently well.

What ordinary action could make the greatest difference in your team?

What the Great Wall Taught Me About Impact

Standing on the Great Wall of China, I was struck not only by its scale, but by the determination behind it.

Every section represents planning, labour, discipline and the contribution of people who were part of something much larger than themselves.

That made me reflect on leadership and impact.

We often imagine impact as one extraordinary action by one exceptional individual but in reality, lasting impact is frequently built through thousands of smaller contributions.
- One conversation.
- One decision.
- One standard upheld.
- One responsibility accepted.
- One person doing their part well.

The strongest organisations and communities are not built by leaders alone, they are built when people understand that their contribution matters to the whole.

What are you helping to build through the choices you make each day?

My journey to Hong Kong did not go according to plan.

A few minutes before the train departed, I realised that a suitcase was missing.

I rushed out to find it, ran in the wrong direction and missed the train.
The suitcase was still missing.
There were no suitable trains available.
I had to take a taxi to the border.

After crossing into Hong Kong, my phone stopped working and I had only 6% battery left.

My travel companion was already ahead of me, and communication was extremely limited.
It was the kind of situation where frustration and panic could easily take over.

The experience reminded me that emotional regulation is not about pretending everything is fine.

It is about recognising the pressure, accepting the reality of the moment and identifying the next useful action.

We cannot always control the situation but we can learn to manage the state from which we respond.

That is mental fitness in practice.
