If your home is insured for less than its actual replacement value, most insurers apply what is called the average clause. In practice, a claim does not pay out in full, even for a small loss, because the shortfall is applied proportionally across the whole claim.

A home insured for 70% of its real value could see every claim reduced by roughly the same margin.

This is why an annual review matters more than the size of your premium. Being technically covered and being adequately covered are not the same thing.
