There are thousands of youths in South Africa that have degrees, diplomas or certificates that cannot find full-time employment as they have no work experience. Thousands more cannot find employment as they have no higher education due to affordability constraints. Statistics South Africa placed the country's general unemployment rate at 29.1% with the youth aged 15–24 years being the most vulnerable in the labour market as the unemployment rate among this age group was 55.2% in the 1st quarter of 2019. Among graduates in this age group, the unemployment rate was 31,0%. The iCOLLEGE vision is to help empower the South African youth by changing the socio-economic disadvantage. The college does not only offer students FULLY-PAID courses, but they also get them "Job Ready" during their programme term. More than 50,000 previously disadvantaged persons are benefitting from this programme for the 2020 calendar year. Students qualify for the programme if they are South African citizens, from the ages 18 - 27 years, have a minimum grade 10 qualification, are not claiming any grants or UIF and are currently unemployed. As part of the iCOLLEGE Programme, all students are EMPLOYED in terms of a fixed-term contract for 12 months where their employers are approached and sourced by iCOLLEGE. Currently, more than 300 companies covering a broad spectrum of sectors and sizes, including Multi-Nationals and SMME's, are participating in this programme. The students are employed as full-time skills and training employees, to undergo face-to-face training at one of the iCOLLEGE campuses for the period of their employment. The remuneration earned by the employee is sufficient to cover the tuition at iCOLLEGE for the 12 months. This will prevent students from completing their studies with hefty student loans to repay. Even though there is no contractual obligation between the employer and employee after the 12-month fixed-term contract, employees who complete the iCOLLEGE Education and Upskilling Programme and perform exemplary in all areas, including academics and discipline, may be allowed to join either their employer or other iCOLLEGE client's operational teams. The benefits derived by students from the iCOLLEGE Programme entirely depends on the student's willingness to knuckle down and improve their academic qualifications and job skills. Over and above the traditional academic component of the student's curriculum, students are required to complete various compulsory job skilling tasks, which are available on the iCOLLEGE Education & Job Skilling App. To assist students to get around the issue of data affordability, the college developed their Upskilling App which is zero-rated (data-free) on the Cell C network. This means that after the App is downloaded and installed by Cell C users, no data is required to use it thereafter. The App is available on other networks, however, normal data charges apply for students who choose not to change their service provider to Cell C. The iCOLLEGE Education & Job Skilling App furthermore offers students access to summarised pre-recorded lectures from iCOLLEGE facilitators enabling students to revert to the lessons should they need to do so for revision of a particular unit standard. iCOLLEGE has designed its courses in such a way that students can enrol at any time of the year which is why they have weekly intakes throughout the year. Therefore, students can apply now and start as soon as their enrolment is verified and approved. The South African president has urged companies to employ previously disadvantaged South Africans, whether they are inexperienced or unskilled.
