Building bankable infrastructure requires strong partnerships.

Standard Bank Corporate & Investment Banking, in partnership with Cresco, will be hosting the Regional Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Workshop in Livingstone, Zambia, from 15–17 September 2026.

Cresco’s Conrad Hefer and Francois Viljoen will be part of the panel facilitating the workshop, bringing together public and private sector leaders to share insights, explore best practices and identify opportunities to develop and finance bankable infrastructure projects across the region.

With a focus on transport, energy, water and digital infrastructure, we look forward to meaningful conversations on turning infrastructure opportunities into projects that can achieve financial close and sustainable impact.

Stronger together.

South Africa’s energy sector is entering one of its most significant transitions yet with the development of the South African Wholesale Electricity Market (SAWEM).

Designed to move the country towards a more competitive electricity market, SAWEM will create opportunities for multiple participants to buy and sell electricity through a transparent market platform, reducing reliance on the traditional single-buyer model.

While implementation timelines have been adjusted to ensure the necessary regulatory and operational frameworks are in place, momentum behind the reform remains strong.

For developers, investors and lenders, this transition signals greater private sector participation, stronger investment confidence and new opportunities for project finance.

As South Africa’s energy landscape evolves, strategic financial advisory and transaction expertise will pay an increasingly important role in helping projects navigate market changes and unlock investment opportunities.

At Cresco, we continue to monitor industry developments to help our clients make informed decisions in a rapidly changing energy market.

Cresco is pleased to be attending the DEVAC HYDROGEN-H INDABA 2026, taking place on 29-30 September at the Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel in Johannesburg.

This year’s theme, “Delivering Africa’s Hydrogen Economy,” moves the conversation beyond national strategies and ambitions towards the practical realities of developing bankable projects, unlocking investment and building the infrastructure and partnerships needed to scale Africa’s hydrogen economy.

Olga Suchkova (née Fedulova), will be speaking at the event, contributing to the conversation around the opportunities and challenges shaping Africa’s emerging hydrogen sector.

The INDABA will bring together government leaders, investors, project developers, technology innovators, industrial off-takers, utilities, financiers and other key stakeholders from across the hydrogen value chain.

We look forward to connecting with industry leaders, sharing insights and discussing what it will take to turn Africa’s hydrogen ambitions into commercially viable projects.

Eskom’s revised Wheeling and Net-Billing Policy changes the risk landscape for existing and new wheeling agreements.

With Revision 2 (July 2026), the removal of the previous grandfathering protection means existing contracts could ultimately be exposed to a move from monthly to hourly reconciliation.

For generators, traders and offtakers, this makes it increasingly important to understand how policy changes could affect contract pricing, volumes and cost recovery.

Cresco’s latest article, written by Robert Futter and Shirley Salvoldi, looks at the three key risks the market should be considering.

Part 3 of 4 | The Death of the Traditional PPA?
In his latest article, Dominic Goncalves explores how merchant markets, trading, battery storage and changing supply-demand dynamics are reshaping renewable energy investment across Africa.

As the market evolves, projects are moving beyond a single long-term offtake agreement towards more diversified revenue structures, combining contracted revenues, market access, storage and risk management.

The question is no longer simply who will buy the electricity? but how can energy be shaped, firmed, traded and delivered to meet real customer needs?

Read Part 3 of our 4-part series to explore what the evolving PPA landscape means for developers, corporates, lenders and investors.

Every successful project starts with a bankable foundation.

Before approaching any lender, a project must meet the essential bankability thresholds. Funders look for complete, credible, and well-structured projects with key commercial agreements in place that provide confidence in future cashflows.

At Cresco, we help clients strengthen project fundamentals, reduce risk, and position their projects for successful funding, laying the groundwork for long-term success from concept to completion.
