The audacity to transform begins with the humility to learn, the openness to be taught, and the courage to lead. Growth is not just about mastering the tools our trade, it is about embracing change, challenging perspectives, and becoming the best version of ourselves and our businesses.

IISA 2026 has been more than a conference, it has been a journey of reflection, learning, and discovery. It has reminded us of the opportunities, challenges, and immense potential that lie ahead for each of us across the African continent. The conversations, insights, and shared vision have inspired me to think differently about the future of our industry and the role we all play in shaping it.

My sincere gratitude to IISA, SASRIA, Santam, sponsors and stake holders for making this experience possible. Thank you for investing in people, leadership, and lifelong learning. The knowledge gained and connections made will continue to influence my journey long after the event has ended.

What Does It Mean to Be an Emerging Broker in South Africa's Short-Term Insurance Industry?

An emerging broker is more than just a new entrant, it's a brokerage in the growth phase, building its client base, strengthening insurer partnerships, and establishing its reputation in the market.

While emerging brokers must meet the same regulatory requirements as established firms, they often benefit from dedicated support programmes offered by insurers, including mentorship, training, technology, and business development opportunities.

The journey from emerging to established is driven by trust, expertise, and a commitment to delivering value to clients. With the right support and strategy, today's emerging broker can become tomorrow's industry leader.

On 1 July 2026, just after Youth Month, Badisa Insurance Brokers proudly welcomed its FY27 Internship Intake, marking the continuation of a successful internship programme that has been developing young talent for more than five years.

At Badisa, internships are more than short-term learning experiences, they are pathways to continuous employment. The programme is designed to equip young people with practical skills, industry knowledge, and workplace experience that position them for long-term careers within the financial services sector.

Through strong collaborations between sponsoring organisations and host SMEs, interns gain valuable exposure to the financial industry while SMEs benefit from fresh talent, increased capacity, and the opportunity to develop future professionals. These partnerships create a sustainable talent pipeline that supports business growth while addressing youth unemployment.

For many participants, the internship provides their first opportunity to enter the financial services sector and opens doors to the broader corporate and mainstream business environment. By removing barriers to entry and investing in young people who may not otherwise have had the opportunity, Badisa continues to create sustainable employment outcomes and contribute to building a more inclusive and skilled financial services industry.

Cyber insurance isn't just for large companies anymore.

Small and medium-sized businesses believe cybercriminals only target big companies with deep pockets but the reality is quite the opposite.
SMEs are increasingly being targeted because we often have fewer cybersecurity measures in place. Think about the risks our business faces every day:

• A phishing email tricking employees into revealing login credentials.

• A ransomware attack locking our systems and demanding payments.

• An email fraud scam results in money being transferred to the wrong accounts.

• A data breach exposing sensitive customer or business information.

The financial impact can extend far beyond recovering our systems. Lost revenue, legal costs, reputational damage, regulatory obligations, and business interruption can all have lasting consequences.

Cyber insurance is designed to complement our cybersecurity efforts, not replace them. It can help our businesses recover financially when the unexpected happens, allowing us to focus on getting back to business.

The question isn't whether our businesses are "too small" to be targeted, It's whether our businesses are prepared if they are targeted.

Do you think, as South African SMEs, are doing enough to protect ourselves against cyber risks, or is cyber insurance still an overlooked part of our business risk management?
