Did you know RAF payments are not immediate - even after settlement?
In many cases, there is still a delay
before funds are actually paid out.

This is due to:
• internal processing timelines
• administrative backlogs
• funding constraints

So the claim being “done”
does not mean the money is already available.

What stage is your RAF claim in?

Most RAF claims move through the same process:
1. Accident and reporting
2. Medical treatment and assessments
3. Claim submission
4. Liability investigation
5. Settlement
6. Payment processing

Most delays happen in the middle stages -
especially during investigation and settlement.

Knowing your stage makes the waiting easier to understand.

Myth: RAF pays out within a few months.
Truth: Even straightforward RAF claims can take years to finalise.

Many people assume that once a claim is submitted, payment happens quickly. Unfortunately, that’s not always the reality.

Before payment can happen, claims often still go through:
• Medical assessments
• Legal processes
• Document verification
• RAF payment queues and delays

And even after approval...
👉 payment can still take time to be processed and released.

A “simple” case does not automatically mean a fast payout. Every case still follows a process, and delays can happen at multiple stages along the way.

Understanding the process helps set more realistic expectations and prevents unnecessary frustration.

What are “general damages” in a RAF claim?

General damages refer to compensation for the non-financial impact that an injury has on a person’s life.
In other words, it’s compensation for the physical and emotional effects of the injury, rather than direct financial losses.

This can include things like:
• Pain and suffering
• Emotional trauma
• Loss of enjoyment of life
• Permanent disability
• Disfigurement
• Reduced quality of life

Unlike medical expenses or lost income, these damages are not based on invoices or receipts.
Instead, they are assessed based on how serious the injury is and how it affects the claimant’s life over the long term.

For example, someone who suffers permanent mobility problems after an accident may qualify for general damages because their daily life has been significantly changed.

However, it’s important to understand that the RAF does not automatically award general damages for every injury.

Before these damages can be considered, the injury must first be classified as serious through a formal medical assessment process.

What does the RAF actually cover?

The RAF exists to compensate people who are injured in motor vehicle accidents in South Africa.
It focuses specifically on people, not vehicles.

Here’s what it can cover:
• Medical costs related to the accident
• Future medical treatment if needed
• Loss of income if you can’t work
• Loss of support if a breadwinner passes away
• General damages for serious and long-term injuries
• Funeral expenses in fatal cases

It does not cover:
• Damage to your vehicle
• Damage to property
• Emotional stress without medical backing
• Minor injuries with no proper medical documentation

Another important thing to understand: the RAF does not pay out immediately after the accident.
The claim must be properly submitted, investigated, and assessed.

What is the Road Accident Fund (RAF)?

The Road Accident Fund (RAF) is a government fund that compensate people who were injured in a motor vehicle accident in South Africa — or their families if someone passes away as a result of an accident.

It covers things like:
• Medical expenses
• Loss of income
• General damages (for serious injuries)
• Funeral expenses (in fatal cases)

The money doesn’t come from “tax refunds” or random budgets.

It’s funded mainly by a fuel levy - meaning every time we fill up petrol, a portion goes toward the RAF.

The claim process can take time - sometimes years - which is why many people feel stuck while waiting.

Statement: The RAF is just “free money” from government.

MYTH!

FACT: The Road Accident Fund (RAF) is there to compensate people who are injured (or families who lose someone) in a road accident — but only if certain legal requirements are met.

It’s not automatic.
It’s not guaranteed.
And it doesn’t pay everyone.

For example:
• If you were the only driver and completely at fault, you usually can’t claim.
• If you miss the 3-year prescription period, your claim can fall away.
• If there’s not enough proof, your claim can be rejected.

A lot of people misunderstand what the RAF actually does - and that’s where problems start.
