𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: 𝟯𝟭 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲

🇺🇸 🇨🇦 The tariff dispute between the US and Canada has entered a new phase as Canada introduced its own tariffs on US products. These Canadian-US tariffs come in response to the US imposing tariffs of C$28 billion on steel, aluminium, lumber and vehicles. They are referred to as a “dollar-for-dollar” retaliation, indicating no resolution is in sight between these two North American neighbours.

These tariffs will be levied on a range of imported US goods, from cosmetics and toilet paper to steel and furniture, worth C$28 billion, as of 8 September 2026.

🇿🇦 🇺🇸 In comparison, South Africa is subject to tariffs of around 12% to 12.5% on select imports to the US.

𝗦𝗔’𝘀 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁-𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 - 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝟯%+ 𝗯𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬

On 20 August 2026, President Cyril Ramaphosa launched Phase 3 of South Africa’s Government-Business Partnership. With the commitment of more than 180 CEOs and government ministers, the aim is clear: South Africa’s economy must grow at 3%+, and a million jobs must be created by 2030.

📌 The first two phases of the Government-Business Partnership delivered real results, building confidence between business and government. It translated into private sector investments of more than R360 billion in new energy production and more than R20 billion committed to port and rail infrastructure.
📌 Phase 3 sees the focus shifting from fixing what was broken to taking advantage of established growth enablers to deliver.
📌 Government and Business have agreed that, if we are serious about meaningfully reducing unemployment, we need to achieve economic growth of more than 3%.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗱?
By targeting three focus areas: fixing infrastructure, boosting specific industries, and fighting crime.
1⃣ 𝘌𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘴: Fixing energy and transport issues by unbundling Eskom, building new power lines, and opening railways to private operators.
2⃣ 𝘎𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘵𝘩 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘴: Boosting jobs in mining, farming, tourism, and public infrastructure projects.
3⃣ 𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦𝘵𝘺: Fighting corruption, reducing crime, and improving basic services at the local government level.

🇿🇦 With such positive news, it is important to also call on smaller businesses and the public to stand shoulder to shoulder with big business and government, as our collective strength can drive meaningful growth, shape our economy, and shut the door on crime to the benefit of every South African.

💙👶🏻 Six months ago, I welcomed my little boy into the world, and my life has never been the same; in the best possible way.

Before becoming a mom, I thought I understood love, responsibility and planning for the future. Then this tiny little human arrived and completely changed my perspective. Every smile, giggle and milestone reminds me just how precious and fleeting time really is. The days can feel long, but somehow the months have flown by.

Motherhood has given my life a deeper sense of purpose. It has also changed the way I think about financial planning.

𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗲.

They are about creating security, stability and opportunities for my son as he grows.

As a financial adviser, I often talk to clients about the importance of planning, but becoming a parent has made that message much more personal. I now understand on a deeper level why protecting your family's future matters so much. Concepts like emergency savings, life cover, retirement planning and long-term investing are not simply financial products or strategies. They represent peace of mind. They allow us to spend less time worrying about the future and more time enjoying the moments that matter today.

One of the things that has become especially important to me is starting an investment for my son as early as possible. Time is one of the most powerful tools in investing, and even small amounts invested from a young age can grow significantly over the years. Tax-free investments are a wonderful way to give children a financial head start, allowing growth to compound over time without the burden of tax on investment returns. A simple step today could make a meaningful difference in his future.

Just as he learns something new every day through small, consistent steps, financial success is built in much the same way. Small investments, good habits and disciplined planning may not seem significant in the moment, but over time they can create something extraordinary.

Looking back on these past six months, I am filled with gratitude. Becoming a mom has brought more joy, love and meaning into my life than I ever imagined possible.

It has reminded me that financial planning is not really about money. It is about people, protecting those we love, creating opportunities for their future, and ensuring that the life we build today can support our dreams for tomorrow.

One thing my son has already taught me is that our greatest investments are the ones we make for those we love most. 💙👶🏻

𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗲, 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱, 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲

In celebration of Women’s Month, PSG hosted various events in Gauteng. Alongside clients and colleagues from PSG, our PSG Menlyn team found renewed inspiration to continue serving in our various roles. Guest speaker Dr Adriana Marais, a director of the Foundation for Space Development Africa, is a researcher at heart, with a passion for topics ranging from quantum physics and the philosophy of science to the origins of life and the building blocks of life in space. As a leader breaking ground for Africa’s first mission to the moon, Adriana encouraged us with her talk on “Out of this world, into the next”.

Equally inspiring was fellow guest speaker, Rachel Kolisi, who is driven by philanthropy and describes herself as a woman, a mother, a founder and a change-maker. She shared her story of “Becoming” – of breaking, rebuilding and choosing to rise anyway.

Motivated by these two powerful women’s messages, we celebrate the strength of women who are not measured by the challenges they face, but by the courage with which they rise above them.

Our resilience is echoed when we show that adversity is not a barrier — but a stepping stone to greatness.

This month, we celebrate the women who rise, lead and inspire.

Our combined battles make us stronger, give us hope and help us find direction.

❄ When a cold spell hits the country, like we have been experiencing the past few days, we are quick to retreat into our warm homes, adding another blanket to our beds or grabbing a warmer jacket. But what about those who do not have the same privileges?

🫠 It is in times like when we are reminded why we should open our hearts and cupboards to the most vulnerable – to the children who long for a sweater or a tracksuit, a pair of socks or sneakers.
🧥 It is in times like these when we realise that a forgotten or outgrown jersey, sweater or jacket in our cupboards is the greatest gift to children facing cold without protection.
It is in times like these that we are reminded that our surplus can be someone else’s survival.

👨‍👧 This winter, our PSG Menlyn team members donated children’s clothes to Kamcare, an NPO in Kameeldrift, Pretoria, whose aim is to care for and develop the community in their service area. Kamcare distributed the clothes to children in schools where there are a huge need for support.
☺️ And as we handed over the clothes and saw the joy and gratitude on the little ones’ faces, we realised that generosity enriches the soul far more than possession ever could.

❄ The winter is not over yet.
We can still make a difference.

✅ July 2026 concluded on a positive note, with China reporting a trade surplus that exceeded forecasts, and the South African private sector signalling modest growth.

📈 At the back of a South African government budget surplus for June 2026, we must remain positive that this modest growth is a sign that renewal is on the cards and that business activity is slowly bouncing back. The S&P Global Purchasing Managers’ Index also indicates a slight improvement in business conditions.

At a time when there is no shortage of global challenges, including the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and between Ukraine and Russia, we start August with the news that positive momentum can emerge, even in difficult times.

On the local front, South Africa’s budget surplus for June 2026 shows that progress is possible, while the Eurozone’s growth in the second quarter of 2026 signals some stability and hope.

✅ In broader terms, an uptick in the Eurozone’s economy could have a positive spin-off for South Africa by strengthening local export markets to that region, which, in turn, benefits local companies and creates a positive climate for investors.
