As geopolitical tensions continue to cause havoc in the Middle East, South Africans are preparing themselves for the most expensive tank of petrol yet when they fill up from Wednesday. The 12% increase in the fuel price will be the highest on record.

🛢️ Warnings have also been issued that oil reserves cushioning the world from supply shocks are running low, adding another risk to markets unless the Strait of Hormuz reopens and confidence returns.

⛽ As high oil prices affect economies worldwide, plans are on the cards to release up to 100 million barrels of emergency oil and diesel stocks, which will hopefully ease high fuel prices in the future.

This is one of my favourite photos – a moment shared between Simphiwe P. Dlamini and me, Magdeleen Cornelissen. At first glance, one might assume that because we come from different backgrounds, we do not share the same heritage. Yet, through friendship and the values we share, I have come to realise that our similarities are a source of strength.

Many people think estate planning is only for the wealthy. The truth is that each one of us who wants to protect our loved ones and ensure their wishes are carried out needs an estate plan.

A will is one of the most important documents you will ever sign, but it is not something that should be drafted once and then filed and forgotten.

💡 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗚𝗣𝗦.

The same applies to your will.

Major life events such as marriage, divorce, the birth of children or grandchildren, changes in your financial position or the acquisition of new assets can all affect whether your current will still reflects your intentions.

An outdated will can cause unnecessary delays, additional costs, family disputes and outcomes that may not align with your wishes.

Legal experts also recommend that your will be drafted in English for practical and administrative reasons and to prevent unnecessary delays.

𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: 𝟭𝟰 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲

🛢️ Last week, the Brent oil price jumped above $100 per barrel, linked to the renewed conflict in the Middle East.

⛽ 🛒 By now, South Africans can predict the impact this latest oil price increase will have on petrol and food prices.

An economic note released by the South African Reserve Bank last week revealed that imported refined products now supply more than half of South Africa’s fuel demand because the country’s refining capacity has halved over the past decade.

The result: South Africa’s oil-import bill could have been billions of rand lower if such a large part of our refining capacity had not been closed. These refinery closures also resulted in direct and indirect job losses and prompted companies to defer investment.

𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 – 𝟕 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔

🛢️ Amid higher energy prices, a strained global economy, continued geopolitical tensions and higher inflation rates that leave many consumers deeply concerned, the agricultural industry adds a glimmer of hope to the South African economy.

📈 According to the Agricultural Business Chamber, South African agricultural exports rose 10% in the second quarter of 2026, from the same period a year ago. Thanks to the effective tariff rate decrease to 12.5% from 30%, there was also an increase in US exports, although still lower than that of the corresponding period in 2025.

🤝 The South African agricultural industry needs all the support it can get to continue growing – from improved performance of our ports to lower export tariffs.
