🏑 A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT SATURDAY MORNING FOR THIS ESTATE AGENT…

Those who know me will know that long before property, valuations and offers, there was hockey — and this morning I had the privilege (or perhaps questionable judgement 😂) of pulling on the kit again for Muir Old Boys Reunion Weekend.

This year we tried something a little different. Rather than Old Boys versus the schoolboys, we mixed the generations together and held a three-team round robin.

The teams were appropriately named after three of our old Woodwork teachers — Ferreira, Puffett and Meyer — because with Old Boys back on a hockey field, a certain amount of chopping and hacking was always inevitable. 😂

The theory was that the schoolboys would provide the youth, speed and functioning knees, while we Old Boys contributed experience, cunning and increasingly unreliable memories of how good we once were.

And it worked brilliantly.

There were goals, great saves, plenty of laughs and more comebacks than we had any right to expect — both on the scoreboard and from Old Boys whose bodies occasionally remembered what they used to be capable of.

There were also several moments when the brain saw the gap, planned the move and sent the instruction… only for the legs to respond, “Absolutely not.”

And I’m pleased to report that my team, the Ferreira Mumbas, emerged as tournament champions. 🏆🏑

So, purely in the interests of historical accuracy, I should probably amend the pre-match prediction:

The youngsters supplied the pace. The Old Boys supplied the experience and slow cunning. And the Mumbas supplied the winners. 😂

But the result was really secondary.

For me, the best part was being back on a hockey field at my old school, playing alongside current Muir boys and Old Boys from different generations, and seeing that the friendships, competitiveness and school spirit are every bit as strong as they were all those years ago.

Property might be what I do for a living, but mornings like this are a pretty good reminder that there’s more to life than houses and offers.

Although tomorrow morning, when I try to get out of bed, I may reconsider that statement. 😂🏑

One of the most important lessons in business and property is simple: make sure you regularly put yourself in a room with people who know more than you do.

Tonight’s Prosperity Enterprises Property Investors Evening in Gqeberha was one of those rooms.

A fantastic evening of property knowledge, different perspectives, good conversations and plenty to take away and think about.

It was particularly great to meet Jaco Grobbelaar and learn from his experience and approach to building and structuring property portfolios — and also to catch up with Neale Petersen from Real Estate Investor, who is always a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the property investment space.

No matter how long you’ve been involved in property, there is always more to learn — and usually the best learning happens when you surround yourself with people who challenge the way you think.

A big thank you to my client Villier for the invitation — very much appreciated — and to Prosperity Enterprises for bringing such a worthwhile property event to Gqeberha.
