Medical schemes are announcing their 2027 contribution increases now.

Most only let you change options once a year, with the deadline usually in November or December for changes from 1 January.

Many people roll over year after year on a plan that no longer fits: paying for cover they don't use, or missing cover they now need. Before you accept the increase, ask three questions.

This Pink October, we're thinking of every woman facing breast cancer and the families beside her.

Medical aid covers treatment, but it doesn't cover the rest: time off work, travel, extra help at home, the bond that still has to be paid.

Dread disease (severe illness) cover pays out a lump sum when you're diagnosed, so you have one less thing to worry about.

Money can feel overwhelming, and it's easy to put it off because you don't know where to begin.

You don't need to fix everything at once. Start with three simple steps.

First, know your numbers: what comes in each month and what goes out.
Second, build a small cushion, even one month of essentials, so a surprise doesn't become a crisis. Third, get a clear picture: list what you own, what you owe and what cover you have, then sit down with someone who can help you see it all together.

That's it. You've started.

Here's what Naidine did first. It wasn't buying a policy.

That's called a needs analysis. It's the step most of us skip.
