A professional sporting career can generate substantial income, but turning those earnings into lasting financial security requires careful planning.

In this episode of EvolvX, Craig Torr, Certified Financial Planner® and director of Crue Invest, joins Gerald de K**k to explore the financial decisions athletes face during careers with relatively short earning windows. From lifestyle creep and debt to family expectations and the behaviours that shape spending, their conversation considers how today’s choices influence life beyond sport.

Watch the interview for a thoughtful discussion about enjoying the rewards of a playing career while building the financial foundations for whatever comes next.

Estate planning should never be treated as a separate exercise from financial planning. The assets you own, how they are structured, your beneficiary nominations, life cover, tax exposure and family responsibilities all shape what happens when you die.

A valid will is essential, but it governs only part of the outcome and cannot, on its own, resolve liquidity shortfalls, support dependants or align assets that fall outside the estate.

In Erin White, CFP®'s latest article for Moneyweb, she explains why financial and estate planning must be coordinated, how liquidity and tax affect the outcome, and why every structure should be tested against the needs of the people who will inherit.

A special bequest can be a meaningful way to recognise someone or preserve a sentimental asset, but even a generous gift can create unintended consequences. The asset may not belong entirely to the testator, may fall outside the estate, carry debt, trigger tax or no longer exist at death.

A cash legacy can also place pressure on estate liquidity and reduce what remains for residuary heirs. Beneficiary circumstances matter too, particularly where the recipient is a minor or financially vulnerable.

Effective estate planning requires every special bequest to be tested against ownership, liquidity, debt, tax, inflation and family claims.

A will is not tested when it is signed; it is tested when the executor must make its promises work, says Eric Jordaan, CFP® talking to Moneyweb:

A living annuity should never be selected in isolation from the retirement plan it needs to support. While provider choice, underlying funds and fees matter, the real work begins with understanding the lifestyle the capital must fund, the income required and how long the portfolio may need to last.

Drawdown rates, asset allocation, tax, liquidity and sequencing risk all need to work together, while the strategy must remain flexible as circumstances change. A living annuity can offer valuable control and estate-planning flexibility, but it also places investment and longevity risk on the retiree. In this article, we explore why a sustainable retirement income depends less on choosing a product and more on building, reviewing and adapting the strategy around it.

Here Devon Card, CFP® talks to Moneyweb:

Your financial plan may be functional without being efficient.

Over time, old policies, scattered investments, dormant bank accounts, outdated beneficiary nominations and forgotten retirement funds can create costs and complexity that are easy to overlook.

Financial organisation is not about reducing everything to the fewest possible accounts. It is about ensuring that every component still serves a clear purpose and supports the broader strategy.

When no one can explain why something remains in your plan, it is probably time for a review.

Your forties are often described as prime accumulation years, but for many families they are also the lean years. Rising education costs, a home loan, ageing parents, career demands and everyday household expenses may all compete for the same income.

The answer is not to abandon long-term goals or force an unrealistic savings target. It is to build a plan that reflects the season you are in.

Protect the foundations with emergency reserves and appropriate risk cover, keep retirement contributions moving at a sustainable pace, set clear boundaries around family support and commit future cash-flow increases before lifestyle costs absorb them.

A realistic, adaptable plan can help you manage todays competing priorities without losing sight of the financial security you are building for tomorrow, says Sherry Tapfuma, CFP® talking to Moneyweb:
