Today, we want to tell you about bizarre auto insurance claims. Some of these are so weird we'll post about them again soon! Imagine leaving your truck and returning to find it covered with teeth marks – everywhere. Sounds a bit like the start of a horror movie, but this is, in fact, what happened to a hunter in the US. Four horses had found his truck and were smitten by the smell of the nicely scented car wax the owner had applied to his truck child. The horses made a meal of the metal – yum! The auto insurance claim was paid out.

Truck and car insurance claims can be unbelievable.

Some people have claimed that they have been hit by invisible cars or that pedestrians, in fact, hit their trucks. One we find quite bizarre is multiple reports of flying trampolines crossing into other properties and damaging vehicles! Luckily, South African winds don't often fling trampolines into other properties.

You wouldn't think vehicle insurance history is a topic that will enliven the scene around the braai, right?

The first vehicle insurance was apparently acquired by one Gilbert Loomis in the US state of Ohio. Loomis was probably considered a bit of a mad scientist type back then; the bloke invented and tinkered on the (then) largely unknown automobiles and apparently got into accidents with his mad inventions almost every other day. No one really wanted to help him cover a policy for his strange, horseless rides. Still, he finally convinced the Travelers insurance company to give him peace of mind with a modified horse and carriage policy.

Insurance is serious business.

Well, most of the time. But sometimes it can be quite funny. Here are some of the weirdest excuses made in car and truck insurance claims (we've heard some funny ones, too!):
-"The other vehicle collided with mine without warning of its intention."
-"I collided with a stationary truck coming the other way."
-"Coming home, I drove into the wrong house and collided with a tree I don't have."
-"I had been driving for forty years when I fell asleep at the wheel and had an accident."

Stats time! You just need to look at the roads in South Africa to see that trucking business means, well, business. It’s flourishing. Despite the pandemic, there are 30% more trucks on South Africa's roads than 5 years ago. In November 2021, the average number of trucks passing through the Tugela toll plaza reached 7,450 per day. Sometimes more than 250 trucks go through that tollgate every hour.
