In her youth business pitch, Azipheli Kolisi shares the inspiring story of how she turned a small shack in Braelyn Nkandla, East London, into a thriving fast food business selling hot chips and fat cakes. Motivated by high youth unemployment and poverty, she created employment for another woman while serving affordable, quality food to the community. Her journey was catalyzed by her placement at ECDC through the National Financial Literacy Association (NFLA), where she gained critical skills in business operations and digital literacy. With a unique focus on excellent service, affordable pricing, and community-building, her team is now seeking funding to improve infrastructure, invest in equipment, and expand services—including delivery and sit-in areas. Despite challenges like poor working conditions, Azipheli is determined to grow the business into a scalable model that uplifts communities and creates more jobs, especially for young women, with NFLA as a long-term strategic partner.

The National Financial Literacy Association (NFLA) successfully hosted its 10-Year Celebration on 04 June 2025 at the East Coast Sunrise Boutique Hotel in East London, under the theme “Celebrating 10 Years of NFLA’s Existence and Strategic Partnerships Towards Youth Acceleration Programs and MSME Development.” The event was a remarkable reflection of a decade of impact, bringing together key stakeholders from government, private sector, academia, and the community to honour NFLA’s journey and foster future collaborations.

The day began with warm welcomes and powerful devotions, followed by a compelling opening address from ECDC’s Mr. Sibusiso Ralarala and a purposeful message from NFLA’s Mr. Zingisa Somlotha. Mrs. Nosipo Mtshali, CEO of NFLA, led a reflective celebration of NFLA’s achievements, while Mr. Ayanda Wakaba, CEO of ECDC, emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships for youth and MSME development. A provincial perspective was shared virtually by Mr. Teboho Qholosha of ECSECC.

A highlight of the event was the vibrant showcase of testimonies and success stories from youth and MSMEs, which were both moving and inspirational. A youth theatre performance highlighted the importance of financial literacy and entrepreneurship. The business pitch session was a standout moment, where youth presented compelling entrepreneurial ideas to potential funders including ECDC, ECRDA, NYDA, and the Land Bank. Winners were celebrated with certificates of recognition.

The afternoon featured robust roundtable discussions on sustainability, drawing insights from local government, business leaders, and development stakeholders. The day concluded with closing remarks from Mrs. Mtshali, followed by a networking session and media briefing.

The event was not only well-executed but left a lasting impact—reaffirming NFLA’s role as a catalyst for youth empowerment and economic development. Stakeholders left energized, inspired, and committed to the continued support of NFLA’s mission.
