Jarvis wins, Gomez second

Correspondent

Graham Jarvis success-fully defended his Roof of Africa title at the final Hard Enduro of the year. The 41-year-old out-gunned a charging Alfredo Gómez, with South African Scott Bouverie rounding out the podium after three days of brutal racing in Lesotho.
After three days and nearly 400km of racing, a mere nine seconds separated the top two riders. The final stage was a classic race of attrition, with the elder statesman’s experience of the epic race in the highlands of the mountain kingdom gradually wearing down the Spaniard on his first visit to Africa.
2016 Roof of Africa Results: 1. Graham Jarvis (Husqvarna) 16:14:40, 2. Alfredo Gomez (KTM) 16:14:49, 3. Scott Bouverie (KTM) 16:21:56, 4. Travis Teasdale (KTM) 16:23:55

CANSA RELAY FOR LIFE LADYBRAND A HUGE SUCCESS

Anneri Goosen

A year ago the CANSA Relay for Life Ladybrand Committee was elected as the work, planning and dreams for this year’s Relay started. And what a way to end off a whole year’s hard work! From start to finish, the evening turned out to be a huge success! The Relay team would like to use this opportunity to thank each and every person for their part in making this event so great. From lending a hand, motivating a team member, putting a team together, buying the luminaria bag, walking a lap (or 270!), right through to the people opening their hearts and their pockets in making a donation, the Cansa committee salutes you and truly appreciates the support in the fight against cancer! To show their appreciation, each committee member felt it in their heart to say thank-you since each one of them experienced the event in their own way. Ladybrand se 3de Relay...wat ‘n sukses. Marna de Witt wil graag haar span bestaande uit Paulette, Anneri, Lena, Yolande, Vanessa en Helen, bedank vir hul harde werk en ondersteuning. “Julle was my regter- en linkerhande, my brein en my hart.
The committee wishes to thank each and every one who contributed towards the success of the event. Thank you for everyone who was involved with the luminaria bags, for each step that was taken by the participants…each step is a step closer to hope!
Says Helen Kennedy (survivors and caregivers): “To our VIP’s - Survivors and Caregivers! Thank-you so much for your time and effort in attending this event - an event truly dedicated to you who inspire us.
You are the people that inspire hope, courage and determination to fight and eliminate cancer. On your behalf we Celebrate, we Remember and we Fight Back! Vanessa van der Westhuizen, responsible for finances says: “How do you begin to thank everyone! Thank them for their time, their efforts, sacrifices made, hard work and donations…
After experiencing my first Relay for Life I was truly brought to my knees with humility, gratitude and awe for the camaraderie and spirit of our little town (and visitors). No matter what was on the wish list, people immediately put up their hands and offered to help where they could (from bars of soap to the making of the arch, prizes and beautiful flowers, every effort was done with love and we are truly grateful).
I have seen first-hand how prayers were answered and our Almighty Father’s hand was over this event from the very first minute to when the incredible winds picked up ending with the most beautiful rainbow and gorgeous evening.
Through this event I have seen the hurt, devastation as well as healing that comes from this horrible disease. It doesn’t affect just a specific gender, age or race… it affects us all - a colleague, a friend, a loved one, a family member...
This event is the one time that some of us can truly get to remember or even show our loved ones that through the darkness we will stand by their side. Even a little girls gesture to donate her hair on behalf of her grandfather’s fight – WOW!!!
To the survivors, care givers and all who made this event possible – THANK-YOU!” Paulette van Zyl was responsible for the teams: “Thank you to all Team Captains and Team Members for their hard work, dedication and spirit!!!
Ladybrand is a special town with special people who came together in great numbers to support a good cause! THANK YOU! Toe ek Saterdag om my kyk, toe klop my hart sommer warm, want dit was die meeste Ladybranders wat ek nog saam gesien staan het vir ’n goeie doel!
Ek was Saterdag ’n trotse Ladybrander!” Lena du Plessis was verantwoordelik vir die Luminaria: “Baie dankie vir elke Luminaria sakkie wat ons gekry het en wat ons Saterdagnag kon gebruik. Dit was so spesiaal! If you wish to see more about the event, please visit the page: Cansa Relay For Life Ladybrand. Feel free to leave a comment about your experience of the evening.
See you again in 2018, when it is time to Relay again!

Garvie brothers to let loose on Lesotho

Correspondent

It is the ultimate test of perseverance, grit, fitness, stamina and outright fearlessness.
It is the world famous Roof of Africa.
For Benoni brothers and endurance riders Calvin (26) and Robert Garvie (23), who will be competing in the brutal Gold Class (a distance of about 380km in total) for the first time from November 30 to December 3, it will be the ultimate test of their long-distance riding ability.
After months of intense training on their bikes and in the gym the brothers, known as the “Garvie Boys” in endurance riding circles, are aware of the task that awaits them in the rugged mountainous terrain of the Kingdom of Lesotho.
Having finished in the Top 30 (among almost 170 starters) on their first ever “Roof” attempt in the Silver Class last year the brothers are focused on going one-up this year by simply finishing the daunting challenge posed by the more difficult Gold Class.
“It is going to be some intense stuff,” said Calvin.
“We are now competing at a higher level and it is going to require ridiculous amounts of physical and mental strength for us.
“You can get four seasons in one day up there in the mountains of Lesotho.
“The conditions are hectic and you never know what to expect.”
The Alphen Park resident have been passionate about riding motorbikes since they were toddlers and their strong bond as brothers will be crucial in their endeavour to cross the finish line.
“We ride together at a similar pace,” added Calvin.
“A tactic of ours is if one of us slips up somewhere, the other doesn’t stop, maintains the same pace and doesn’t wait around for the other.
“If you slip up it is then your job to catch up to the other so that time is not lost and to avoid lactic acid build up.
“Mentally, having your brother alongside you helps to keep you strong.”
A sentiment echoed by the younger Robert.
“We train together, we ride together and we make incredible memories together,” he said.
Robert added that all of the sacrifices made and the hours spent training will pay off for the brothers.
“It will be one of the hardest things we have ever done.
“It will be tough and demanding.
“The Roof is definitely not for sissies.”
The Garvie brothers thanked all the people who have supported them in the lead up to the Roof of Africa.
