▪RATE ANNOUNCEMENT▪

With the CPI inflation stabilising over the last 3 months up to Feb 2025 (3.0%, 3.2% and 3.2% respectively), it seems the MPC have opted for a conservative decision today and kept interest rates unchanged, with the prime rate lingering at 11%.

Although our nominal rate is close(ish) to the rates experienced in a stable market during 2015-2016, the real interest rate (adjusted for inflation) is still way too high.

This could be a reason why sentiment and the property market has still been slow to respond.

*Why a shorter term? *

With a shorter term, you'll generally pay less in interest over the life of the bond. This is because interest is typically calculated on the principal amount for a shorter period, resulting in lower overall interest payments.

~INFLATION SLOWING

After holding steady for ten months in the 5–6% range, annual consumer price inflation slowed to 4.6% in July from 5.1% in June. The July inflation print is the lowest in three years since July 2021, when the rate was also 4.6%.

~ RAND 'GOING STRONG'

The South African rand strengthened to a nearly 13-month high on Monday, ahead of the release of domestic inflation data today (for July)

Yesterday the rand was trading 0.7% firmer at 17.7375 against the dollar, a level not seen since late July 2023.

Today's report on July inflation figures will provide hints on the MPC's future interest rate path, and we anticipate good news...

~ FUEL PRICES
Good news for motorists, even better news for inflation.

From Jan to May 2024, petrol prices shot up by R3.00/L, which had a resulting effect on South Africa’s CPI inflation rate. The CPI started the year at 5.3%, then jumped up in February to 5.6%, before returning to 5.3%. In June CPI inflation had slipped to 5.1%.

With another 66 cents per litre cut expected for September, the total price reduction since June will total R3.14, giving motorists a small but positive swing in prices of around 14c/L since the start of the year.

With petrol prices dropping, the CPI is expected to drop even lower, to under 5.0% in July, and then closer to 4.5% over the rest of the third quarter of the year.

This, no doubt, is a sign for a decent interest rate reduction in Sept and general easing of household budgets.

It’s never been a better time buy.
