Debt Review Reminder: Staying in Communication Matters

Debt review is a legal process designed to help over-indebted consumers repay their debts in a structured and affordable way.

However, it is very important for consumers to understand the following:

When you apply for debt review, agree to a repayment arrangement, and then later decide to stop paying through the agreed process, short-pay, miss payments, or pay your credit providers directly, you remain responsible for communicating with your debt counsellor.

Your debt counsellor cannot simply remove you from debt review because you say the debts are paid. The correct documentation must be provided.

If you have settled the accounts that were included in your debt review, you must provide your debt counsellor with the relevant paid-up letters from the credit providers. Once the debt counsellor has the required proof and you qualify in terms of the National Credit Act, a clearance certificate can be issued.

In many cases, a consumer may still qualify for a clearance certificate even where a home loan remains, provided the other debt review accounts have been settled and the bond is up to date or being paid as required.

Please remember:
Debt review does not disappear because you stopped communicating.
Debt review does not automatically end because you paid accounts directly.
Your debt counsellor needs the correct paid-up letters to finalise the process properly.

We understand that life happens. But disappearing for months or years and then returning frustrated because the debt review flag is still active often causes unnecessary stress, stress that could have been avoided with proper communication.

If you are under debt review and your situation has changed, please speak to your debt counsellor. If you paid accounts directly, send the proof. If you are unsure what is still outstanding, ask for guidance.

At DCGsa, we are here to assist consumers through the process, but we can only act on the information and documents provided to us.

Pause the Panic, Protect Your Assets
Debt review is your shield against legal action and repossession. Stop the threats, keep your car, and save your home—all while taking control of your finances!

is your vehicle or home about to be repossessed?

Have you received a section 129 letter or letter of demand?

Are you in areas with your repayments and need to do something before its too late?

Times are tough and missing payments on your debt has been something most South Africans have had to do to survive. However credit providers are legally able to repossess your asset if you have not made payment. If you have missed payments on your vehicle or house and you are worried about repossession taking place you need to urgently do our debt assessment.

Fake “debt review removal” services
This is one of the biggest traps in the market.

Some companies advertise that they can “remove” debt review quickly, often charging thousands of rand for the service. The NCR noted a surge in these advertisements, with some consumers being charged more than R8,000 for so-called debt review removal services.

The problem
The NCR has made it clear that this kind of “debt review removal” is not supported by law in the way these adverts often suggest. Consumers who have been declared over-indebted generally cannot simply pay someone to erase their debt review status. The legal process depends on the facts of the matter and whether debt obligations have been settled as required.

Why consumers get trapped
These adverts are often emotional and urgent. They promise:

fast clearance,

instant removal,

clean credit profile restoration,

and legal shortcuts.

A stressed consumer sees hope. A scammer sees opportunity.

What to do instead
Before paying anyone for any service related to debt review withdrawal or clearance, verify exactly who they are, whether they are registered, and whether the service they are offering is actually lawful and realistic. You can do this by contacting the NCR on
