Financial Education is an essential component of our financial well-being. Unfortunately, very little focus is given to this important life skill required to function as independent and empowered adults.

We tend to think of saving as something you do once the "real" financial stuff is sorted. Once the debt is cleared, once the salary is higher or once life feels a bit more stable.

But saving isn't the reward for having your finances together. It's the training ground for getting there.

Every time you choose not to spend on something you could technically afford, you're practising a small act of self-control. Not deprivation but discipline. And that discipline doesn't stay in your bank account. It shows up in how you handle a stressful meeting, an impulsive decision, a hard conversation you've been avoiding.

Saving isn't just about the number that grows in an account. It's about the person you become in the process of growing it.

What's the smallest saving habit that's taught you the biggest lesson?

We tend to treat our salary as the finish line. Get the raise, land the promotion, hit the higher bracket and somehow, we imagine, the money problems will sort themselves out. But lifestyle has a habit of expanding right alongside income. New salary, new car payment. Bigger bonus, bigger holiday. The gap between what comes in and what goes out never actually closes.

Wealth isn't built in the moment you earn more. It's built in the moment you decide not to spend more just because you can.

That's not about deprivation. It's about intention. Knowing where every rand is going, and making sure some of it is going somewhere that grows.

What's one spending habit that's made a real difference for you, big or small?

The Power of Possible starts long before the plan does. It starts in the imagining.

Picture someone who's never been debt-free. Not "struggling less" but actually free. No repayments, no anxiety when the phone rings, no quiet dread on payday. For a lot of people, that image doesn't even form. It's been switched off, filed under "not for me."

But every debt-free person you know once had to imagine it first. Every emergency fund started as someone picturing a version of themselves that could handle a bad month without falling apart.

Picasso wasn't talking about finances, but the line holds anyway.
"Everything you can imagine is real."

Imagination isn't the soft, optional part of change. It's the first real step. You can't build a plan for a future you've never let yourself picture.

What financial future have you struggled to imagine for yourself?

The Power of Possible isn't just this year's MSWSA theme. It must drive every money decision we make.

Because long before a budget gets drawn up or a debt repayment plan gets created, beliefs quietly run the show. "We're just bad with money." "People like us don't get ahead." Or simply the resignation of, "this is just how it's always going to be."

These beliefs shape what we attempt, what we avoid, and what we give up on before we've even tried.

Our mindset decides whether we pick up the phone to negotiate that interest rate. Whether we open the account statement instead of avoiding it. Whether we believe a different story is even worth writing.

"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right."
- Henry Ford

What's one money belief you've had to unlearn?

We're offering a limited number of participants the opportunity to attend a virtual Debt Management Masterclass. To apply, complete the link below

This year's MSWSA theme is "The Power of Possible" and honestly, nothing sums it up better than this quote by Nelson Mandela, "It always seems impossible until it's done."

This quote resonates so much whenever I sit with a client who's convinced their money story is fixed. That debt is just "who they are." That saving is for other people, and investing is reserved for the wealthy. That the patterns they grew up watching are the patterns they're stuck repeating.

But money stories aren't facts. They're just the version we've been telling ourselves the longest.

The plans that actually work don't start with a budget. They start with someone deciding a different outcome is possible and then doing the unglamorous work of proving it, one decision at a time.

What felt impossible in your financial life a year ago? And what changed?

We are offering a free online Debt Management Masterclass in participation of MSWSA.

If you would like to register or know someone who could benefit, please share.

I accidentally registered to attend the in-person MSWSA 2026 Launch today as opposed to the virtual session. And I am so glad that I attended because I got to meet the amazing people behind this initiative.

Since the inception of Money Messages, 5 and half years ago we have been helping to promote financial education in whatever way my small business can...not only during MSWSA but every opportunity we can.

Whilst we never do this for the accolades, I was deeply humbled and surprised for the recognition of having been a participant for the past 5 years.

To my fellow financial education advocates, I urge you to participate and help with this ongoing cause in whatever way big or small.

Here's to The Power of Possible 💪🏽

Women are builders, leaders, nurturers, problem-solvers and change-makers.

May we keep challenging limits, creating opportunities, supporting one another, and building lives of choice, confidence and financial independence.

Happy Women’s Day to every woman making it happen in ways big and small.
