With universities reopening and many young drivers getting onto the road for the first time, risk exposure naturally increases. Inexperience, distraction, and nighttime driving are common factors in incidents involving learners and new drivers.
Safety reminders for learner/new drivers:
• Remember that learner drivers must be accompanied by a person with a valid driver's license.
• As a new driver, avoid driving alone at night, especially in unfamiliar areas.
• Keep phones out of reach and out of sight. Distraction is one of the biggest risk factors for new drivers.
• Regularly check tires, lights, wipers, and fluids. Learner and new drivers often overlook these basics.
• Consider planning routes in advance to reduce stress and unexpected turns or changes.
Important
It is required by law that a learner driver must be accompanied by a person with a valid driver's license in South Africa. This is a condition of cover that insurance policies require.
• Example:
Anele recently received her learner's license, and one afternoon, she used her father's car to drive to the nearby store quickly. It's a short trip and she chose to drive without a supervising driver who holds a valid driver's license. When leaving the parking area, Anele misjudged the distance and accidentally drives into another car, causing damage to that car only.
• Anele's father submits a claim to his insurer for the damage caused to the other car. Because Anele was driving without a supervising driver, she did not meet the legal and policy requirements for learner drivers at the time of the accident. Even though her father's car wasn't damaged, the policy does not cover damage caused while a driver is in breach of licensing or policy conditions. As a result, the claim is rejected.
