Behind an individual’s many financial plans is an unspoken tension – and it’s not the market or tax burdens – years of disciplined saving and knowing that someone else’s choices may end up being your responsibility.
Before committing to supporting anyone else financially, the first principle is understanding your own position, because helping others at the expense of your own long-term security is rarely a sound strategy.

The world has changed enormously and in fundamental ways, affecting the world of work and what is expected from employees, who face their own challenges as salaries fail to keep up with the cost of living. Yet employee benefits do not address these issues, so South Africans are left carrying a “hidden tax” of cognitive overload, financial stress and disengagement.

As South Africa enjoys a welcome respite from the persistent waves of loadshedding, the habits formed during years of turmoil remain deeply embedded in the nation's psyche. From home generators to the increasingly common practice of fuel storage, the remnants of a power crisis linger, even as stability returns to the electricity supply.

Dwindling electricity has forced many households to adopt back-up power solutions, particularly among wealthier clients who have been quick to embrace the new norm. Yet, as the echoes of blackouts fade, a troubling trend has emerged: the practice of storing petrol and diesel continues unabated, with potentially dire consequences.

With universities reopening and many young drivers getting onto the road for the first time, risk exposure naturally increases. Inexperience, distraction, and nighttime driving are common factors in incidents involving learners and new drivers.
Safety reminders for learner/new drivers:
• Remember that learner drivers must be accompanied by a person with a valid driver's license.
• As a new driver, avoid driving alone at night, especially in unfamiliar areas.
• Keep phones out of reach and out of sight. Distraction is one of the biggest risk factors for new drivers.
• Regularly check tires, lights, wipers, and fluids. Learner and new drivers often overlook these basics.
• Consider planning routes in advance to reduce stress and unexpected turns or changes.
Important
It is required by law that a learner driver must be accompanied by a person with a valid driver's license in South Africa. This is a condition of cover that insurance policies require.
• Example:
Anele recently received her learner's license, and one afternoon, she used her father's car to drive to the nearby store quickly. It's a short trip and she chose to drive without a supervising driver who holds a valid driver's license. When leaving the parking area, Anele misjudged the distance and accidentally drives into another car, causing damage to that car only.
• Anele's father submits a claim to his insurer for the damage caused to the other car. Because Anele was driving without a supervising driver, she did not meet the legal and policy requirements for learner drivers at the time of the accident. Even though her father's car wasn't damaged, the policy does not cover damage caused while a driver is in breach of licensing or policy conditions. As a result, the claim is rejected.
