⚔️I slayed a dragon this weekend (well technically a fire breathing 🔥 dragon-turtle🐢)
This weekend I dusted off the classic Super Mario Bros and played right through to the end (still losing far too many lives to those pesky Hammer Bros 😅).
What struck me wasn’t just the nostalgia, it was how brilliantly the game mirrors the discipline of long-term financial planning, risk management, and investing:
🟢Start simple, master the basics → 🌍World 1-1 eases you in with straightforward jumps and low-risk Goombas. No sensible investor begins by piling everything into high-volatility exotics. We start with the fundamentals: emergency funds, diversified core holdings, and the power of compounding. Building confidence and a strong foundation.
🟢Power-ups = strategic preparation & diversification → Collecting a mushroom 🍄(to grow your position), fire flower🌻 (for adding in some suitable higher risk investments), or star ⭐️(navigating risk) is deliberate preparation. In portfolios, it’s thoughtful asset allocation, regular rebalancing, protective elements like insurance or hedging, and building buffers that provide ‘extra lives’ during market downturns or unexpected volatility.
🟢Hidden blocks and secret paths → The juiciest rewards often aren’t obvious. 🔎A deep dive into due diligence, spotting undervalued assets, or identifying tax-efficient structures can unlock significant advantages. In long-term planning, probing the right questions early—around estate goals, legacy objectives, or risk protection—reveals those ‘hidden’ opportunities that others overlook.
🟢Lives and checkpoints → Fall into a pit? You respawn wiser, having learnt the pattern. 📉Markets crash, recessions arrive, setbacks are part of the journey. But with solid planning (liquidity buffers, drawdown strategies, behavioural coaching), you preserve capital and get back on course. True ‘game over’ only happens if you stop playing.
📌The end goal is clear (rescue the princess = achieve financial independence, retirement security, or legacy objectives) → Yet the path includes plenty of surprises (‘the princess is in another castle’ = regime shifts, black swans, life events). 💵Effective financial planning keeps the North Star (client goals, time horizon, risk tolerance) in sight while remaining adaptable.
Mario isn’t just a plumber🦺🛠—he’s a long-term risk manager in overalls, dodging hazards and stacking coins for the win🪙
