A sincere thank you to everyone who attended Mazi Asset Management's sessions at the Meet the Managers event. It was a privilege to engage with financial advisers and share insights on building resilient multi-asset portfolios in an increasingly uncertain investment environment.

A special thank you to our portfolio managers, Kopano Makhu and Shaun Bruyns, for an insightful presentation that highlighted an important principle; successful investing is less about predicting the future and more about preparing for it.

Their discussion reinforced the value of process, discipline, and the ability to identify opportunities amid uncertainty.

The conversation continues tomorrow in Cape Town, and we look forward to welcoming another group of advisers and investors for what promises to be an engaging and thought-provoking session.

Thank you to The Collaborative Exchange for hosting a well-organised and impactful event.

Why does the South African Reserve Bank focus on inflation, and why should investors care?

During a recent conversation on The Investment School on 702 with Stephen Grootes and Chantal Marx and Prof. Eben Maré unpacked the critical role inflation plays in the economy and investment markets.

The South African Reserve Bank's primary mandate is to protect the value of the currency by maintaining price stability. By monitoring and managing inflation, the SARB helps create a more predictable economic environment where businesses can invest with confidence, consumers can plan for the future, and investors can make informed long-term decisions.

As Prof. Maré explains, understanding inflation and the SARB's response to it provides valuable insight into the future direction of interest rates, bond markets, economic growth, and ultimately investment opportunities. It is one of the most important indicators investors should monitor when assessing risk and positioning their portfolios.

At Mazi Asset Management, we believe successful investing requires looking beyond today's headlines and understanding the economic forces that shape long-term outcomes.

Operation Phumelela was established with an important ambition; to strengthen South Africa’s position as a globally competitive financial hub and gateway for investment into Africa.

Its focus on improving the competitiveness of South Africa’s financial sector, deepening capital markets, and attracting investment has the potential to support economic growth, unlock opportunity, and create meaningful long-term impact for the country.

In this important conversation, Malungelo Zilimbola shared why collaboration between business, institutions, and leadership will be critical in building a globally competitive South Africa. South Africa has the talent, expertise, and resilience to compete globally. The opportunity now lies in aligning these strengths toward a shared vision for growth and progress.

On Stephen Grootes’s latest Investment School podcast, Kopano Makhu joined Mamokete Lijane to unpack how investors should think about positioning portfolios in a more uncertain and fragmented world.

The conversation explored how inflation, geopolitics, fiscal pressures, and changing monetary policy dynamics are reshaping the investment landscape.

The discussion highlighted:
• The importance of adaptability in portfolio construction as market regimes evolve
• Why diversification alone may not be enough in periods of structural change
• How active asset allocation and forward-looking risk assessment are becoming increasingly important
• The growing role of geopolitical and policy uncertainty in shaping market outcomes
• Why investors need to think beyond short-term market noise and focus on long-term resilience

At Mazi Asset Management, we believe investment management requires continuous learning, disciplined thinking, and the ability to evolve as the world changes. Conversations like these are critical in helping investors navigate increasingly complex markets with greater clarity and confidence.

While the rest of the world is only beginning to embrace AI in investing, Mazi Asset Management has been quietly building and refining machine learning capabilities designed to drive long-term outperformance.

Stephán Engelbrecht, Portfolio Manager at Mazi Asset Management, was in conversation with Asset TV host Joanne Baynham, to unpack the success behind Mazi NextGen, our proprietary machine learning platform.

Mazi NextGen combines the power of advanced algorithms with human investment expertise. Our investment principles, market insights, and years of experience are encoded into systematic models that continuously analyse data, identify patterns, and adapt to changing market conditions.

By removing emotional bias and applying probability-based investing, the platform helps uncover high-conviction opportunities and construct portfolios with greater precision and consistency.

At Mazi, we believe the future of investing is not humans versus AI, it is humans and AI working together, each playing to their strengths to make smarter, data-driven investment decisions.

Ahead of the South African Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee announcement on 28 May 2026, join Prof. Eben Maré and Kanyisa Ntontela for an insightful webinar unpacking the forces shaping South Africa’s interest rate outlook.

Eben brings decades of experience across derivatives, fixed income, treasury, absolute return, and multi-asset investing. Throughout his career, he has held senior portfolio management and leadership roles, guiding investment teams through major market events and periods of uncertainty.

In 2016, he assumed responsibility for a fixed income franchise during a particularly volatile period in South African markets, helping stabilise the money market business while expanding the broader fixed income offering. He later took responsibility for an absolute return franchise, with a continued focus on delivering strong risk-adjusted returns across multi-asset portfolios. Under his leadership, one of the flagship funds received three consecutive Morningstar awards, as well as a Raging Bull award during the Covid-19 period.

We are proud to now have Professor Eben Maré bring this extensive experience and depth of insight to Mazi Asset Management.
