What an awesome little graph by Every single South African should not only know their credit score but be in control of it. This now shows you how...

1. Payment History - The most important factor is your payment history. Do you pay in full and on time every month? If you make slow payments, partial payments or don't pay at all your score will be negatively influenced. Consistency and reliability is key!

2. Amounts Owed - In comparison to your income, how much of your monthly income is being spent on repayment of debt? It makes sense to have some debt but not to the level where the majority of what you earn goes into the repayment thereof.

3. Credit Age - How old is your debts? Have you been using credit efficiently and responsibly for a long time or is your record of having access to credit only a month deep? Anyone can keep their debts under control for 1 month... Being a long term responsible credit user counts in your favour.

4. New Credit - How much recent and new credit have you taken? Is there a record to show that you can cope with the increased burden of the additional credit you have taken? How many new and different enquiries for debt have you made? Applying for clothing, vehicle servicing debt and various other short term debt arrangements at the same time may indicate that you are financially strained and cannot service basic needs adequately without a heavy reliance on credit.

5. Types of Credit - Lastly the type of credit makes a difference. You need to clearly understand the difference between Good Debt and Bad Debt. Buying a house? Good Debt! Buying the latest clothing on account?? Not quite. A credit card that is settled in full every month? Good Debt! A credit card where you make the minimum payment every month... not so great!
