SOUTH AFRICA:
• The main budget registered a record R80bn surplus in June, compared with R49bn a year earlier, supported by strong revenue collections and subdued expenditure.
• Corporate income tax (CIT) and mineral royalties surged, suggesting revenue received a boost from higher precious metal prices.
• The forecast is for the FY26/27 budget deficit to narrow to 3.4% of GDP (National Treasury: -3.7%), as the commodity windfall boosts revenue and cushions the oil shock.

GLOBAL:
• The price of Brent crude oil fell below US$90/bbl, shedding more than 5ppt after US President Trump cancelled a planned military strike and announced resumption of peace talks with Iran. A shift to US$78/bbl this week ?.
• The US dollar weakened after Japan’s Finance Ministry confirmed coordinated yen-buying operations in conjunction with the US Treasury on Friday. The move helped curtail the yen’s slide after touching a four-decade low, while pushing the trade-weighted US dollar (DXY) below the 100 psychological mark.
