What does financial planning look like when your child has special needs?
For parents and families, this can be one of the hardest conversations to begin, and one of the most important to have.
In this episode of Life Chapters, Money Choices, Financial Planning When Your Child Has Special Needs, Kim Potgieter and Michael Avery speak to Bryony Gilmour, a financial planner at Chartered Wealth Solutions and mother to Kerry and Jade.
Bryony shares her family’s story of raising Jade, who has Down syndrome, and how becoming a financial planner later in life gave her a different way to think about estate planning, life insurance, trusts, guardianship and family responsibility.
It is a thoughtful conversation about care, money and long-term responsibility, and about making sure siblings are included without being left to carry a responsibility that should have been planned for.
Kim also refers to the Lifeline Activity, a reflective exercise that helps you look back at the highs, lows, lessons and people that have influenced your life so far.
