IDENTITY THEFT ON THE RISE IN RUSTENBURG: GREEN ID BOOKS TARGETED.🚨
Residents of Rustenburg are being warned to safeguard their green barcoded ID books, which have become prime targets for criminals.
Reports suggest that these IDs are being stolen and sold from as little as R2 000, fueling a rise in identity theft and credit fraud in the area.
WHY GREEN ID BOOKS ARE TARGETED❓️
Unlike the newer Smart ID cards, green ID books have weak security features.
They are easier to forge, clone, or misuse, making them attractive for criminals looking to commit fraud.
The Department of Home Affairs has previously confirmed that green ID books are linked to a high rate of identity theft in South Africa.
WHAT THEY DO WITH YOUR ID:
●Criminals use stolen IDs to open bank accounts, apply for loans, or commit credit fraud.
●Victims often only discover the crime once debt collectors or banks come after them.
●Fraudsters may even use fake identities to buy cars, cellphones, or commit crimes under someone else’s name.
●Fake marriages
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF:
●Upgrade to a Smart ID card: It is safer, modern, and has advanced security features.
●Keep your ID safe: Never hand it to strangers or leave it unattended.
●Report immediately if your ID is lost or stolen at SAPS and Home Affairs.
Check your credit record regularly for suspicious activity.
●Use fraud prevention services like the Southern Africa Fraud Prevention Service (SAFPS).
