If you know, you know. ☀️⛈️⚡

Spring in Johannesburg can change the view pretty quickly — and with the return of warmer weather comes the return of summer rainfall and thunderstorms.

It’s a good time to make sure the parts of your property that manage rainwater are ready too!

Because when the sky changes this quickly, you don’t want a blocked drain joining the conversation. 👀

Winter is officially over, but it left a few things behind. 👀🌱

As we start the spring season, it’s a good time to take a walk around your property and see what may need a little attention after the colder months.

A few places worth checking:

🏠 Roofing & ceilings — look for visible damage, leaks or signs of damp.
💧 Gutters & downpipes — clear leaves and debris and check that water can flow freely.
🧱 Walls & retaining walls — watch for new cracks, movement or deterioration.
🌧️ Drains & stormwater channels — make sure they’re clear before the summer rains arrive.
🌳 Trees & branches — look for damaged or overhanging branches that may become a problem later.
🔎 Around the property — keep an eye out for anything winter may have been a little hard on.

Why does this matter from an insurance perspective?

Maintenance and insurance don’t do the same job. Insurance is there for insured events, subject to the terms and conditions of your policy, while general wear, deterioration and maintenance remain important property-owner responsibilities.

A quick spring check may help you spot a small maintenance issue before it becomes a much bigger problem!

🌱 So, winter has handed your house back… what are you checking first? Tell us below. 👇

Your geyser may be working—but is it installed correctly? 💧

A compliant installation needs more than a supply of hot water. Important safety features help manage pressure, temperature changes and potential leaks, including:

✔️ A drip tray to catch and direct leaking water
✔️ A clear discharge pipe that drains safely
✔️ The correct safety and pressure-control components
✔️ Secure support for the geyser and pipes

This isn’t a DIY inspection. Ask a qualified plumber to assess your installation, verify their PIRB registration and confirm whether they can issue a plumbing Certificate of Compliance.

Save this post for the next time your geyser needs a check! 📌

Now for the important question: Who Wore It Best? 👀 Tell us in the comments!

Tag the person who handles the “house stuff”! 😄

The weather has been a little wacky lately! 😜
Sudden temperature changes can put extra pressure on your geyser. 🌦️

Before the next cold spell catches up to us, take five minutes to check for the warning signs. 🧐

Make sure you also know where your main water shut-off valve is to act F.A.S.T. (check out one of the previous videos for help here) and have a trusted plumber’s details saved.

Spotting the signs early could help prevent a small concern from becoming a much bigger problem.

27/08/2026

Did you know that a refurbished or second-hand geyser is not automatically illegal—but trading in one that does not meet South Africa’s compulsory requirements, is.

The National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) requires new and modified domestic geysers to comply with VC 9006 and the applicable safety and labelling requirements before they may be offered for sale. The supplier should be able to provide proof of a valid NRCS Letter of Authority for the product.

Why does this matter? 🤔🤷‍♀️

Some refurbished geysers may have been acid-washed, rewelded or altered after reaching the end of their usable life. Without proper testing and approval, this may create risks such as:

💧 Leaking or rupturing
⚡ Electric shock
🔥 Failure under pressure and temperature
📈 Reduced energy efficiency
📄 Missing warranty or compliance documentation

From an insurance perspective, a working geyser is not necessarily a compliant one. If an unapproved unit later fails, the insurer may investigate its condition, approval, installation and whether any non-compliance contributed to the damage. The outcome will always depend on the circumstances and specific policy wording.

Before accepting a refurbished or second-hand geyser, ask for:

✓ Proof of NRCS approval
✓ Clear manufacturer and serial details
✓ Warranty documentation
✓ Installation by a qualified plumber
✓ The relevant installation paperwork

The NRCS and industry bodies continue to warn consumers, contractors and insurers against non-compliant refurbished geysers.
