🚨🚨HIJACKING ALERT: TOYOTA COROLLA CROSS OWNERS 🚨🚨

Do you drive a Toyota Corolla Cross?

Recent reports indicate that this popular vehicle is becoming an increasingly attractive target for vehicle theft and hijacking syndicates in South Africa.

One insurer has already classified certain Toyota Corolla Cross models as higher risk following a significant increase in theft and hijacking claims. Some affected policyholders are now required to install additional tracking devices to retain their theft and hijacking cover.

Criminals often target popular vehicles because they:

🔹 Blend easily into everyday traffic
🔹 Are difficult to identify quickly, particularly in common colours
🔹 Have a high demand for parts
🔹 Can be illegally re-registered and resold

What should you do?

✅ Check that your tracking device is active and functioning correctly.
✅ Carefully review the security requirements shown on your policy schedule.
✅ Remain alert when approaching or leaving your home.
✅ Avoid predictable routes and routines where possible.
✅ Keep valuables, bags and electronic devices out of sight.
✅ Never place your life at risk by attempting to fight back during a hijacking.

Please remember that security and tracking requirements differ between insurers. Failure to comply with a compulsory tracking requirement could affect your theft and hijacking cover.

Unsure whether your vehicle has specific tracking or security requirements? Contact NIC Brokers so that we can review your policy and help ensure that your cover remains in place.

The baboons leave. The damage remains. Will the insurer pay?

A troop of baboons enters a home and, within minutes, damages the roof, gutters, solar panels, appliances and household contents.

Most homeowners would assume the loss is covered.

That assumption could be costly.

Damage caused by baboons and other wildlife is not automatically covered under every insurance policy. The insurer may consider the exact policy wording, how the animals entered the property, whether reasonable precautions were taken and whether any exclusions or claim limits apply.

A door left open, an unsecured window, damaged roof tiles or poorly managed refuse could all become relevant when a claim is assessed.

For estates, homeowners’ associations and sectional title schemes situated near natural areas, wildlife is no longer simply an environmental issue. It is a property, liability and risk-management concern.

Does your policy cover wildlife-related damage?
Are there limits or exclusions you may not be aware of?
Are you taking reasonable steps to secure your home?

The most important lesson is this:

The worst time to discover a gap in cover is after the damage has already been done.

Insurance should not only respond to familiar risks. It should be reviewed against the real risks facing a community—including the unusual ones.

Proactive risk management begins with asking the questions others may overlook.

With the recent heavy rains in the Garden Route, many homeowners are being reminded just how important the right Body Corporate and HOA insurance really is.

But what exactly does it cover? 🏘️

Body Corporate & HOA insurance is designed to protect the shared property and structures within complexes, estates and community schemes. This can include:

✔️ Buildings and common property
✔️ Storm, flood and weather-related damage
✔️ Boundary walls, gates and communal areas
✔️ Liability claims involving common property
✔️ Damage to shared services and infrastructure
✔️ Fidelity and trustee indemnity cover

Many people assume their personal household insurance covers everything — but in sectional title schemes and estates, the Body Corporate or HOA policy plays a critical role in protecting the community as a whole.

At NIC Brokers, we understand that no two estates or community schemes are the same.
We do not believe in forcing Body Corporates and HOA’s into a “one-size-fits-all” box. Our products and solutions are tailor made around each client’s unique needs, risks and requirements.

After severe weather events, the importance of correct cover and the right advice becomes very real.

Stay safe, stay prepared, and make sure your community is properly protected. 🌧️🏘️
