81% of South African Grade 4 learners cannot read for meaning in any language. That is PIRLS 2021, and the figure has barely shifted in a decade.
Today is International Literacy Day. Our position on it is simple.
Reading is the skill every other skill sits on. It shapes who finishes school, who gets hired, who gets heard.
So child literacy sits inside our CSI work, not beside it. Through the iThemba Trust, founded by Nutun, we back early childhood development and literacy programmes in South African communities. In 2025, our CSI programmes reached 6,071 lives.
There is no quick fix here. There is just the next child, and the next book.
