🎬 South Africa’s film history reaches back much further than many people realise.

In May 1896, early motion pictures were screened in Johannesburg, only months after the Lumière brothers’ famous commercial screening in Paris. Hollywood’s first permanent motion picture studio was established only years later, in 1911.

By 1915, African Film Productions had been established in Killarney, Johannesburg, helping lay the foundation for a local screen industry with deep historical roots.

It is a powerful reminder that South Africa has not simply followed the global film industry. We have been part of the moving-picture story for more than a century.
