What’s holding women entrepreneurs back?

The gender gap in entrepreneurship is real, and every day women entrepreneurs from across the world, and particularly on the African continent, are battling everything from equitable access to funding, through to access to new market opportunities.

Change needs to happen, and it starts by getting people talking, listening, and getting things done differently.

This critically important challenge is one being addressed in a new book by Susanne Althoff, titled,

‘Launching While Female: Smashing the System That Holds Women Entrepreneurs Back.’

She investigates the obstacles women, especially those of colour, face when launching, funding, and growing their companies, obstacles that persist because the current start-up world was engineered by and for white men.

It’s an exposé of the gender gap in entrepreneurship and provides a road map for a more inclusive and economically successful future for us all.

Ultimately, if the world is to survive and eventually thrive during these uncertain times, we need to find practical ways we can open up the entrepreneurial system to women on an equitable basis.

We need to address the economic and societal barriers that hold them back from fulfilling their considerable potential.

By giving women entrepreneurs the opportunity to voice their experiences, it means we can all learn and help to address these barriers and play our part in being the change the world needs to see in business and society.

Our most precious resource is time

Time management - we read about it in our business books, we hear it spoken about in our business podcasts, we know it is important for our businesses.

So why is it that, as entrepreneurs, we constantly seem to feel as though there are not enough hours in the day to achieve what we need to - that we are constantly chasing time? What needs to change is our attitude to how we treat time - we need to think about it as a resource just like any other.

If we think about managing time in the same way as we manage our money and our budgets, we would treat it very differently. We would plan to maximize our time in the same way as we look to maximize the money we have at our disposal in the business.

We formulate detailed plans to manage our budgets and finances in the most effective way - we need to do the same with our time management and place the same amount of value on that process.

As the world renowned business management consultant and author, Peter F Drucker, said, “Until we can manage time, we can manage nothing else.”

Start valuing time as the precious resource it really is in our lives and our businesses and manage it better going forward.

So where can you start to help prepare your children for an uncertain future and give them every chance to achieve success?

Firstly, start by talking to your kids about money, openly and honestly, and show them what is happening to your finances and expenses in this current situation. My Mom and I had frequent candid conversations about money. She shared the mistakes she had made and her regrets about not saving enough. Her honestly never made me see her in a bad light but rather made me respect her more. She is human and I admired her for her honestly and her eagerness to teach me to do better.

Don’t be afraid to speak with you kids. Remember that experience combined with knowledge is the best way to equip your kids to face an uncertain future with more confidence. Teach your kids about fixed and variable expenses and talk to them about options for cutting variable expenses. Challenge them to find creative ways to save money like saving R1000 on your food budget.

It is good to talk about the family values and how they influence behaviour. Our family values will dictate how we utilize our money so work together as a family and set some goals that everyone can work towards achieving.

It is important to remind children that majority of wealthy people became that way through hard work, saving and investing. Only a small amount of people become wealthy by being YouTube sensations. When children can see that it is achievable, even if it doesn’t look glamourous, it enables them to work towards achieving it.

Start today by teaching your kids good financial habits that will help them reach their financial goals. These include creating a side hustle, managing income, saving (a minimum of 15% of everything earned) and investing money to have it work for them. Take them into the bank and open a bank account for them with a saving pocket and set up an automatic transfer to save that money. Teaching them to “Pay themselves first” is one of the most valuable lessons you can give them.
