SRC OCCUPATION

Hey everyone. The occupation at the "SRC Offices" is still on.

If anyone is able to donate food or money for food, please do. Food can be dropped off at the offices & monetary donations can be made through e-wallet (0731033433).

More bodies would also be great. The aim is to occupy each office. Remember that you can do work from here as well.

Thank you

SRC OCCUPATION IN SUPPORT OF
On the 25th of April 2016, an meeting was held whereby members of the student body of the university currently known as Rhodes (UCKAR) called for the dissolution of the Student Representative Council (SRC). This decision was taken after a member of the SRC’s name appeared on the and the SRC as an institution failed to take any action against the alleged perpetrator, even though it was clear that those who put him in office (the students) had no desire to continue being led by him. A list of signatures was submitted to the SRC, as required by the constitution of UCKAR and an extra ordinary student body meeting was set to take place on the 4th of May 2016.
On the evening of the 28th of April 2016, one of the SRC councillors posted on the Rhodes SRC page, revealing that the SRC had chosen to keep important information from the student body. The information they chose to hide is that, within the council, they have two councillors, who, through a Yes/No ballot had indicated that during their time at UCKAR, they had at some stage been perpetrators of sexual violence. By hiding this information from the student body at a time when we are fighting against r**e culture, the SRC makes it very difficult for the students to understand their stance on issues that have been highlighted since the launch of the Chapter 2.12 campaign.
There has been a lack of support and poor visibility from the SRC throughout this time. In addition, the SRC declared and supported management’s decision to continue with business as usual, despite the tensions on campus. A statement regarding the occupation was e-mailed to the SRC President and he has failed to respond. We, as members of the student body, refuse to be led by an SRC that is as incompetent and mediocre as the one currently in office. They have lied to the students, failed to represent us at crucial times and still fail to recognise us and our concerns and therefore we call for the IMMEDIATE RESIGNATION OF EACH MEMBER OF COUNCIL. We will occupy the offices (now known as ASINAMALI OFFICES) until our demand has been met.
WE ARE MAKING AN URGENT CALL TO THE STUDENT BODY OF UCKAR TO JOIN US IN OCCUPATION AT THE ASINAMALI OFFICES. EACH OFFICE NEEDS TO BE OCCUPIED. WE NEED TO , SO STUDENTS ARE FREE TO BRING ALONG ANY WORK THEY NEED TO DO OR BOOKS TO STUDY AS WELL AS LAPTOPS. THERE ARE DESKS TO WORK ON AND EDUROAM IS AVAILABLE.
FUTHERMORE, WE ARE MAKING AN URGENT REQUEST FOR ANY FOOD OR MONETARY DONATIONS DURING OCCUPATION. BOTH CAN BE DROPPED OFF AT THE ASINAMALI OFFICES OR VIA E-WALLET (0731033433).

Systematic Hunger, Systematic Oppression.

Oppidan students list of demands.
We demand that the statement released by Catherine Deiner be retracted as it is biased and is not a true version of events. The statement is based on hearsay and not all the parties involved were contacted before the statement was released. This is unbalance.
We demand that the university apologise unconditionally and give us tangible evidence and release a statement with the true version of the events. The first shall be the last and the last shall be the first. The journey will continue.
We demand the university to provide food to all those students who sent their names to the SRC as well as those students who are on the list of names handed over to the Vice-Chancellor. We demand these students to be allocated to a dining hall by Wednesday 20 April 2016.
No student must be criminalized or subject to any disciplinary procedure for taking part in this legitimate protest. We have been forced into taking this action because our academic, social and emotional well-being is compromised by our hunger.
We demand that these students needing lunch assistance be allocated to various dining halls.
We demand the university to respond to us by 17:00pm

15/04/2016

This statement is in response to the several false allegations made by Catherine Deiner, Media Relations Officer of the university currently known as Rhodes.

Our "BLACK PAIN" has been a mocking stock of this colonial university, our black pain that we exprience everyday has become a joke to those who are in comfort zones and those who live in privileges and are complicit to whiteness.

These false allegations are as follows:

The first false allegation: "In the past few days, the protesters have not only eaten food but they have also wasted food by throwing it into bins”. This is a blatant lie because each Oppidan student who had a plate finished their food. If food was wasted, it was definitely not by any protesting students. The truth must be told.

The second false allegation: “In some instances the kitchen staff has been verbally abused by the protesters.” Once again, this is a lie that works to criminalize black students. The kitchen staff of all dining halls were treated with the utmost respect and were thanked for their efforts before protesters left the halls. Tell no lies and claim no easy victories.

We demand that the statement released by Catherine Deiner be retracted by Saturday the 16th of April 2016 as it is biased and is not a true version of the events. The statement is based on hearsay and not all the parties involved were contacted before the statement was released. This is unbalance. We demand that the university apologise unconditionally and give us tangible evidence and release a statement with the true version of the events. The first shall be the last and the last shall be the first. The journey will continue.

This is not an isolated incident. The university has continuously defamed the movement in an attempt to silence the movement. This white capitalist monopoly has told us that they will take disciplinary action against the students if they continue to go into dining halls. We will not be victimized by the land looters and colonialist thugs of this university and we will not back down. The protests will continue until the university comes up with a long-term solution to this issue. No threat posed to the movement will make the dedication to the struggle waver. Our blood shall nourish the dreams of our future generation. We cannot live in hunger forever. Poverty must be destroyed in all forms. We demand justice in all forms of life, NOW.

WE CANT BREATHE...We cannot sit and be silenced while poor black students are hungry and dying. The issue of hunger have been raised within this institution and it not has been properly attended. Who can only eat bread and water and academically pass at the same time? Lets meet at the Union Lawns at 12pm Wednesday 13 April 2016. This issue needs to be resolved now and forever. Decolonization is a must. See you there.

Guys come to the drostdy lawns.

25/02/2016

The struggle is not over. Management has tried to make a mockery of our struggle and as a result has delegitimized it. We are, however, not giving up. Comrades, we have taken the time to compile a list of demands as well as a list of people who have been financially excluded. The fact that we were able to compile such a list after management told us no one was financially excluded, proves that they have not been honest and it's time we took a stand. Let us mobilize and put up the barricades again. The university needs to shut down until Mabizela attends to us. He will meet us on the streets and we will present him with our demands. The time for conversation is over. The university will not operate until we are taken seriously and our demands are met and those who are financially excluded return. LET US MEET TONIGHT AT THE DROSTDY LAWNS AT 9PM"

25/02/2016

GUYS PLEASE CAN WE START MOBILIZING AT THE DRAMA DEPARTMENT ASAP!

25/02/2016

To the Student Body of Rhodes University:
AROUND 1:30AM AND AGAIN AT 6:00AM (25 FEBRUARY 2016), DR MABIZELA DEMANDED THAT PROTESTERS REMOVE BARRICADES. HE LATER REMOVED THEM WITH ASSISTANCE FROM CPU, HITEC AND OTHER RHODES STAFF MEMBERS.
WE DENOUNCE HIS ACTIONS, AS THEY DELEGITIMISE THE STRUGGLE OF THE STUDENTS WHO WERE INVOLVED.
STUDENTS WHO PARTTAKE IN THIS MOVEMENT SHOULD NOT BE VICTIMISED BY EITHER MANAGEMENT OR THE POLICE.
On 24 February 2016, members of the student body were addressed at the Kaif by the Vice Chancellor, Dr Sizwe Mabizela. In this meeting he was to address demands that have been made by students.
1. The time of the address (10:20) was unknown to most of the students and many could not attend, due to lectures and tutorials.
2. When the floor was open for students to ask questions, he walked away and refused to return to the meeting.
3. An announcement was made for students to meet at 21:00 at the Drodsty Lawns.

On WhatsApp circulated a message stating that there would be a meeting, at the same time, at the Drama department. This, we believe, confused many students.
A small number of students attended the meeting that was announced at the Kaif. We decided to mobilise, after agreeing on the following demands:
1. PERSONAL DEBT
When a student has an outstanding amount of money owed to the University, failure to settle this debt hinders them from registering the following year. This happens to students on NSFAS and cash-paying students. We demand that personal debt from previous years do not hinder students from registering in the following year.

2. HISTORIC DEBT (OWN CONTRIBUTION)
A number of NSFAS students are in in debt due to the fact that their parents/ guardians were unable to pay in full the own contribution that the RU Financial Aid Office required them to pay in 2015. Most have been requested to make payment plans with the fees committee in order to prove that they will indeed settle the debt by the end of 2016. However, there are students whose payment plan requests were declined by the Fees Committee. These students have not been allowed to register to this day. We call on the university management to account for them. We believe that these students form part of the missing middle that Dr Mabizela has been working so hard to assist in registering and continuing with their academic careers. We demand that these students be accounted for and a plan of action be put in place to ensure that they return to university ASAP.

3. ACCOMMODATION AND TRANSPORT FOR STUDENTS
We demand that the university provide transport for students who are stuck at home because of having had to leave, following being thrown out of residence at the end of the supplementary exam period, to return to Grahamstown. It should be noted that these very same students have lost their place in residence due to the late release of supplementary exam results, either late registration due to a delay in the release of results or the inability to register. We demand that the University helps these students by providing them with adequate accommodation. It should be noted that there are students who are currently homeless sleeping in the labs and lecture venues. This should not be happening.

4. OPPIDAN BUS SHOULD BE A PERMANENT TRANSPORT FOR STUDENTS:
The Oppidan bus service should be operating permanently. That should to be amended in the transport policies as soon as possible. Resources are not easily accessible there in the townships where some of Rhodes students live. The University should ensure that the Oppidan Bus has a central location from which to pick up students who live in the township, instead of avoiding the township as it is “dodgy”. Moreover, the bus service should during meal times, for students who have to go back to their homes for food.

5. HARRASMENT:
The disturbance that is made by police vans that are moving around the campus must be addressed immediately. We don’t want to be questioned, harassed, and intimidated by perpetuators of colonialism.

6. THE SRC CONSTITUTION MUST CHANGE IMMEDIATELY
The constitution that allows an executive structure to exclusively reshuffle its members each other must change. Students ought to be given every right to elect their leaders even if some members of the SRC have resigned. Additionally, the divide and conquer strategies must end even if it means we go without a so-called SRC. Instead of isolating students and going to dining halls to pull them away from protest action, you should rather allow them the chance to decide for themselves. What you are doing is disruptive and it is breaking the student body apart. Your job is to be where the students are, regardless of how insignificant we may be. Things do change. This is why the by-election should be cancelled and the SRC dismantled and re-elected. And that includes their advisor.

If you are financially excluded and/or need help with registration, please send us an inbox as soon as possible. This information will remain confidential and will only be used to compile a list to send through to management

25/02/2016

We sense there is confusion amongst the student body and we would like to give you some clarity on why we decided to commence with the protests tonight.

Tonight's protestors are not affiliated with the whatsapp message stating worker demands and complaints about "potatoes with potatoes and rice with rice". When the protests commenced, two main issues were brought up. The first issue was that of financial exclusion and the second issue related to the historical debt that some students have to carry.

We felt as if our demands weren't being taken seriously because last year during the movement, it was declared that no student who performed well academically would be financially excluded and yet, that was not the case. So what students want to do is close down the school until those who are financially excluded are back in school and in lectures, where they are supposed to be.
