Case Study: When an Oil Leak Becomes the Real Claim
We recently dealt with a transport claim where one of our client’s tankers leaked oil.
At first, the focus was naturally on stopping the leak and assessing the immediate impact.
However, once the spill response started, the real exposure became clear.
The claim extended far beyond the tanker itself and included:
• Environmental contamination
• Road and site clean-up
• Spill containment
• Disposal of contaminated material
• Potential third-party damage
• Specialist clean-up contractors
• Ongoing monitoring until the area was made safe
The clean-up process took approximately five days, which highlighted how quickly environmental related costs can escalate.
This claim reminded us of something critical Low clean-up or environmental limits are no longer enough.
In today’s risk environment, even one oil leak can leave a client significantly out of pocket if the policy limits are not correctly structured.
For transporters, logistics operators, fuel carriers, and contractors, environmental exposure should not be treated as an afterthought. It must form part of the overall risk review.
At Boutique Insurance Brokers, claims like this reinforce why we continue to focus on proper risk engineering, policy structure, and realistic limit reviews.
Because insurance is not only about the visible damage.
It is about protecting your business against the full financial impact that follows.
