💗Women’s Month Reflection: The Hidden Financial Toll of Breast Cancer💗
October is not only a time to celebrate the strength and resilience of women — it’s also Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
With family members affected, this became even more present in my life as a father and husband; this plays on your mind. I have seen how a diagnosis can impact more than just health — it can have a profound effect on financial stability, confidence, and life after treatment.
While many women plan for medical aid or dread disease cover, the hidden costs of breast cancer often go unnoticed until they’re faced head-on. These include:
🔹 Breast reconstruction surgery — often classified as cosmetic and not fully covered by medical aid
🔹 Fertility preservation — skipped by nearly 12% of patients due to cost
🔹 Wigs, headscarves, and specialized bras — essential for dignity and comfort, but seldom budgeted for
🔹 Transport to treatment centers — especially in rural areas
🔹 Psychological support and counseling — for both patients and their families
🔹 Loss of income — many women take extended leave or resign, and caregivers often do the same
In South Africa, treatment costs can range from R10,000 to R450,000 per year, depending on the stage and type of care required. Even with medical aid, gap cover, and dread disease policies are crucial to bridge the shortfall. [thestar.co.za]
💬 My message this Women’s Month:
Empowerment starts with awareness. Let’s encourage women to not only prioritize their health but also their financial well-being. Early detection saves lives — and early financial planning protects futures.
If you or someone you love has questions about cover options, gap policies, or financial planning for critical illness, I’m here to help.
