Izandla Fund (derived from Izandlazethu Fund) is a recognition of the hard work of hundreds of thousands of hospitality industry (restaurants and bars) workers who come from all corners of the continent and have literally built the SA hospitality industry. Working long shifts with no guaranteed pay, they do it with a smile and continue to sustain one of the economy's mainstay industries. Stats SA estimates this number in the region of 300 000 people, representing 41% growth in employment numbers over the last decade. Restaurants and coffee shops account for nearly 50% of the revenue of this sector. The sector currently generates about R4,5 billion is sales on average monthly or close on R60 billion per annum.
Despite these glittering numbers, workers remain largely marginalised. There are no benefits to speak of and hardly any long term savings they are afforded. izandla Fund is a first for these workers irrespective of their country origin. The fund is an opportunity for them to crowd fund together and invest in restaurants and bars similar to the ones they work for, to become shareholders in assets owned by the fund. Further, the fund offers workers access to loans and other short-term benefits.
