Understanding Geyser Replacement and the SANS 10254 requirements.
1. The new amendments to the compulsory specifications for hot water storage tanks for domestic use (VC9006), as per the notice in the Government Gazette of 3 March 2016, make clear reference to the new requirement from geyser manufacturers in South Africa to ensure not only that geysers comply with the requirements of SANS 151, but also to the energy efficiency rating Class B.
2. All geyser manufacturers must produce and supply energy efficient B class geysers. The new requirement is that these systems have thicker insulation preventing heat loss and reducing electricity consumption. This law came into effect on the 15 September 2018.
2. All installations must meet with SANS 10254 requirements - the mandatory regulations that govern the installation, maintenance, replacement and repair of fixed electric storage water heating systems (ie, geysers)
3. Should the respective areas on non-compliance of the installation of the geyser not be made compliant, it may result in injury or death and possible future warranty/guarantee/insurance claim(s) being voided.
It remains the responsibility of the Body Corporate to ensure that the plumbers they appoint are doing the job correctly, qualified and according to the SANS 10254 Specifications where possible.
4. Ensure your plumber is a Licensed plumber and PIRP registered and that a certificate of compliance is issued by the plumber on completion of the work.
