An act of kindness: Qoboshiyane and family puts a smile on Church congregants amid Covid19 pandemic challenges

By: The Blue Group

East London – day 23 into the nation-wide ‘lockdown’ of the ‘Covid19 pandemic’ has prompted Eastern Cape’s Deputy Speaker of the Provincial Legislature, honorable Mlibo Qoboshiyane to donate food parcels to needy church congregants in Quigney. The lockdown has sparked nation-wide anger, while at the same time, reviving the spirit of Ubuntu by ordinary citizens, politicians and businesses alike to help the poor.

Approximately, 30 underprivileged congregants of the Victoria Methodist church, circuit 313 in Quigney, received food parcels from Qoboshiyane to keep warm during the lockdown. The beneficiaries are from different parts of East London. As part of fighting and minimising the spread of the Coronavirus or Covid19 pandemic as famously known, national government initially imposed a ‘national lockdown of 21 days’ which has seen an addition of two more weeks as the number of infections and deaths continue to increase.

The beneficiaries seemed happy and grateful for the benevolent act demonstrated by Qoboshiyane during which – most described as ‘the most challenging period of their life’ as they have nowhere to solicit such kindness. The lockdown has seen many citizens suffer due to the lack of income and businesses close down in compliance to the government’s call to minise human interaction while encouraging social distancing and personal hygiene.

Street vendors and small businesses are the most impacted by the pandemic. This could have dire consequences for the country’s economy as many businesses are anticipated to retrench, others even close down permanently due to a lack of economic activity during the lockdown. However, government has made a ‘national relief fund’ available for businesses to apply for financial assistance in order to cope with the lack of cashflow. On the other hand, all major South African banks have provided financial relief in the form of payment holidays and loans to both customers and businesses who qualify.

Lock down means we have to stay at home. Dont attend funerals that you are not even related to. The government has limit funeral attence to 50 and if you above the number it means you are contravening with the law and you will be jailed for it.

Your landlord unilaterally amends your lease agreement without consulting you. In particular, he amended the rental amount from R3000 to R 4500 per month and his reasons are that he made a mistake when you both signed the lease agreement.

Questions

1. Is your landlord allowed to do so in law?

2. If not, what was he supposed to do?

3. Let us assume you refuse to accept the rental increase, what do you think the landlord can do to ensure he gets R4500 rental per month?

4. If you refuse to accept the amendment, what options do you have?

5. Can mistake on his part be a valid reason to amend the lease agreement?

CORONAVIRUS COVID-19 STATEMENT BY THE ECTTC

"The Eastern Cape Transport Tertiary Co-operative calls upon its member co-operatives not to panic during this difficult time of the COVID-19. We, however, encourage you to follow the guidelines as issued by the Honourable President of the Republic of South Africa, Honourable Cyril Ramaphosa and the Minister of Health Zweli Mkize.
We further urge you to ensure the safety of the members of the public using our services by ensuring that our drivers tune in to radio stations so as to allow members of the public to have access to information issued on the virus, have sanitizers in our vehicles and ensuring our drivers are equipped to deal with the commuters having regard to the guidelines.

In light of the fact that this outbreak came at the time where we have to provide transportation to students and members of congregations to various destinations across the country, and with the fact that movement of the people has been discouraged, this pandemic has started having bad economic implications on our members and their employees. In the circumstances, we wish to reiterate our commitment in serving our members that we will engage with the government in an endeavour to ensure that the financial loss is minimised.

This will be in accordance with the guidelines that were provided by the small business development minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni in introducing Debt Relief Fund on Thursday, 19 March 2020. We will communicate directly with all our member co-operatives on the latest developments in this regard. Together we can defeat this virus and get things back to normal. We are aware that most of our members are paying installments for their vehicles and this pandemic will cause a tremendous loss of income for your businesses and may also cause loss of jobs.
Stay calm we will ensure that you benefit from the debt relief fund planned for all SMME'S.
