Kivu Trade and Investment Concept
1. Regional Background
The Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the largest country on the African continent and the most potentially rich in the world yet ranked among the poorest on the globe. This explained by the many years of internal and external conflicts that the country has been subjected to.
The country hosts the most sought mineral resources and still has highest reserve of many other mineral resources. Its natural reserves (rain forest, big rivers and game reserves and/or national parks). The DRC has 26 provinces among which the South and North Kivu, and Maniema (previously one Kivu province – the Greater Kivu) which are among the country’s richest provinces in natural resources. These rich provinces are located on the eastern region of the country bordering Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania.
These provinces are so very strategic for the economic development of the Democratic Republic of Congo in such way they provide external link to the Eastern and Southern Africa market via the Kalundu harbour in Uvira which link Tanzania, Burundi and Zambia. The Kavinvira board post between Burundi and DRC, the Ruzizi border post between Rwanda and DRC, the Gisenyi border post between Rwanda and DRC, and the () border post between Uganda and DRC. To add to that the Goma Internal Airport provide direct flights between DRC – Kampala, Nairobi and Dar – es – Salaam.
The Greater Kivu hosts thousands of hectares of fertile yet unexploited lands. Big rivers with high capacity to produce electricity. The natural reserve provide great potential of tourism. The Lake Tanganyika contains the most diverse fish’s populations.
Kivu Trade and Investment Forum, known as Kivu Train, is a parastatal investment agency created by AfriDev Consulting (Pty) Ltd to promote the face of the Greater Kivu in view to attract investments in direction of this rich yet long suffering region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The South Kivu provincial government is the major shareholder of Kivu Trade and Investment Forum.
Investment forums and business expos will be organised throughout African cities where leading and prominent sons and daughters of Kivu will be presenting the image of Kivu and preaching the gospel of opportunities, the potentials that lay in this rich part of the African great lakes region.
Guest speakers and/or key note addresses will always include current or past officials from the provincial governments in the Greater Kivu, professors of universities both from the Greater Kivu and outside the DRC, business figures from the Greater Kivu, and on the other side invited will be potential investors to the Greater Kivu and friends of the DRC and Kivu in particular.
