Founded in 1936, Alliance Française de Durban is the French corner of KZN. We promote not only the French language and culture but also, more widely, the dialogue between all cultures and the development of the multi-cultural wealth of the city of Durban and of South Africa. We strive to be a point of reference in Durban for life-long learning, the promotion of art and culture and the exchange of

ideas. A local meeting place for the global family. The Alliance Française of Durban is both a local NPO and the member of a network of more than 800 language and cultural centres around the world.

⚓📸 A journey through 400 years of maritime history!

The Embassy of France in South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi, the French Defence Mission in Pretoria, the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), the Alliance Française of Durban and the Port Natal Maritime Museum invite you to discover a unique photo exhibition commemorating the 400th anniversary of the French Navy.

From historic voyages to contemporary missions across the globe, this exhibition celebrates four centuries of French naval heritage, innovation, and commitment to the world’s oceans.

The exhibition also marks the upcoming arrival in Durban of L’Astrolabe, France’s iconic polar patrol and research vessel, highlighting France’s long-standing engagement in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica, as well as the strong maritime ties between France and South Africa.

As the world continues to reflect on the importance of protecting our oceans following World Oceans Day, this exhibition serves as a reminder of the shared commitment of France and South Africa to maritime cooperation, scientific exploration, and ocean conservation.

It is also the perfect opportunity to (re)discover the Port Natal Maritime Museum, one of Durban’s hidden gems, and explore its fascinating permanent collection dedicated to the city’s rich maritime history.

📸 PHOTO EXHIBITION
🗓️ 19–24 June
🕰️ Mon-Sat: 8:30-15:30. Sun: 10:30-15:30
📍 Port Natal Maritime Museum, Samora Machel Street, Durban Central

🎬🌍 The African Cineclub, our monthly club dedicated to films from across the African continent and organized by in partnership with , returns this month with a powerful and visually striking tale:

🔥 NIGHT OF THE KINGS by Philippe Lacôte

One night at La MACA prison in Abidjan, one of the most overcrowded prisons in the world, a young inmate is chosen by the prison’s leader to become the new “Roman” - the storyteller whose duty is to entertain the other prisoners through the night. As the red moon rises, he begins weaving a spellbinding story inspired by the legendary outlaw Zama King, blurring the lines between myth, memory, and reality.

✨ A hypnotic and vibrant film that explores storytelling, power, survival, and imagination in the face of violence.

Praised for its stunning cinematography and rich oral storytelling traditions, the film premiered at the 2020 Venice Film Festival and was Ivory Coast’s official submission to the Academy Awards.

🎬 Big screen. Real lives. Good coffee. Once a month, we gather to watch the world a little more closely.

Following the moving screenings of The Last Seed, Fish With A Story and Paradise, we continue our documentary film series at Humble Coffee with another powerful true story. 🌍☕

🚨 This June, we screen SAVE OUR SOULS by Jean-Baptiste Bonnet.

Set in the Mediterranean Sea aboard the Ocean Viking rescue ship, this gripping documentary follows humanitarian crews as they respond to the ongoing migrant crisis, saving men, women and children attempting one of the world’s deadliest sea crossings. Through intimate moments at sea, the film sheds light on human dignity, solidarity and the moral urgency of rescue operations in the face of political indifference.
A deeply human and essential film that confronts one of the defining humanitarian issues of our time.
We are honored to share this moving documentary with our community.

📚✨ We were honoured to join today’s inspiring conversation around translating stories across South African languages with acclaimed translator and author George Lory.

Hosted by UKZN - Pietermaritzburg Campus in partnership with Alliance Française Pietermaritzburg, with the support of IFAS and the Embassy of France in South Africa, Lesotho and Malawi, the discussion explored the richness of South African literature, the art of literary translation, Lory’s close relationship with Breyten Breytenbach, and the journeys stories take across languages and cultures. 🌍

Inspired by George Lory’s book Les Strelitzias: Balades en littérature sud-africaine, the event brought together English, French, and Afrikaans in a warm and engaging exchange on language, identity, and storytelling. 📖💬
