Over the past few months, I've had the privilege of sharing some of the lessons I learned while sailing the Cape to Rio race. What began as an invitation to step far outside my comfort zone became one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life.

The Atlantic taught me that success is rarely about smooth sailing.

It's about how you respond when plans change, when conditions become uncertain, and when the destination still feels a long way off. It reinforced lessons that have shaped the way I approach both leadership and business:
• Preparation creates confidence.
• Trust builds strong teams.
• Resilience carries you through adversity.
• Communication strengthens relationships.
• Mental endurance keeps you moving forward.
• And every challenge presents an opportunity to grow.

At Rodel, these aren't just lessons from a yacht race - they're values that guide the way we work with our clients and one another every day.

🌊 Lessons from the Atlantic #7: The Journey Is the Greatest Reward

After 25 days at sea, we finally crossed the finish line into Rio Bay.
It was just before 6 a.m. We were cold, exhausted, and relieved to have completed one of the toughest challenges of our lives.

Crossing the line was an unforgettable moment. But looking back, I realised the finish wasn't the greatest reward. The real reward was everything that happened before it.

It was learning to trust one another in difficult conditions. Adapting when plans changed. Solving problems together. Sharing hardships that ultimately strengthened our relationships. Those are the moments that stay with you long after the destination has been reached.

The same is true in business.
We often celebrate the deals we close, the milestones we achieve, and the goals we reach. But lasting success is built long before those moments. It's shaped by the people we work alongside, the challenges we overcome together, and the lessons we learn along the way.

Because while every finish line deserves to be celebrated, it's the journey that truly defines us.

🌊 Lessons from the Atlantic #6: The Toughest Challenge Wasn't Physical

Crossing the Atlantic tested me in ways I never expected.

Yes, it was physically demanding. The cold, the storms and the relentless watch rotations took their toll.
But the greatest challenge wasn't physical.
It was mental.

For 25 days, our crew lived in close quarters with little sleep, constant uncertainty and the knowledge that conditions could change in an instant. Yet throughout the entire journey, not a single harsh word was spoken.
That taught me an important lesson.

Mental endurance isn't about pushing harder. It's about remaining calm when you're tired, trusting the people around you, and keeping your focus on the destination instead of the discomfort.
In business, there will always be pressure. There will always be setbacks.

The teams that succeed aren't necessarily the strongest - they're the ones who stay composed, support one another and continue moving forward together.
