Is Your Business Hiding Inside Your Personal Insurance?

Many small businesses start from home, at the dining room table, in a spare room, from the garage, or with a personal vehicle being used for business errands.

As the business grows, the insurance risk can change.

Business stock, tools, laptops, equipment, client items, deliveries, or regular business use of a vehicle may not always be treated the same as normal personal use.

A home contents policy may also need to be reviewed if stock is stored at home, clients visit the premises, or part of the home is used for income-generating activities.

This does not mean every small business owner needs a complicated commercial policy. In some cases, a combined personal and business insurance solution may be worth considering. In other cases, separate personal and commercial policies may still be more suitable.

The important part is to review the risk properly and not assume that personal insurance automatically covers business activities.

At Inscorp Insurance Brokers, we help small business owners understand where personal and business risks may overlap.

Your goods are on the road… but who is responsible for them?

When goods leave your premises, the journey may involve more than one party.

There may be a cargo owner.
A transporter.
A subcontractor.
A driver.
A loading point.
A delivery point.
And a set of documents that may become very important if something goes wrong.

This is why Goods in Transit insurance should not only be seen as “the load is insured.”

It is important to understand who is responsible for the goods while they are being transported, what agreement is in place, and whether the policy wording matches the way the transport is actually being done.

This becomes even more important where subcontractors are used.

Before goods are transported, it helps to ask:

* Is there a clear agreement between the cargo owner and the transporter?
* Does the transporter’s policy allow the use of subcontractors?
* Does the subcontractor have suitable cover in place?
* Are there route, tracking or security requirements?
* What documents may be needed if there is a loss?
* Where could Contingent Liability apply if another party’s cover is insufficient?

It is not enough to know that cover exists.

You need to understand how that cover responds.

In transport insurance, the responsibility behind the load can matter just as much as the load itself.

The storm may pass… but the admin can feel endless

When severe weather hits, most of us first look at the visible damage.

The leaking roof.
The water coming through the ceiling.
The damaged gate.
The fallen tree branch.
The wet carpets.
The damaged stock or equipment at a business premises.

But once the weather clears, the insurance process often begins.

This is where clear information can make such a difference.

Whether it is your home, vehicle, contents, small business or commercial property, it helps to keep record of:

* Photos of the damage
* When the damage happened
* What emergency steps were taken
* Invoices or quotes for urgent repairs
* Maintenance records, where available
* Any damage to contents, stock, equipment or business operations

In personal lines, this may affect your home, household contents, vehicles, gates, walls, outbuildings or electronic items.

In commercial insurance, it may also affect stock, machinery, access to the premises, deliveries, income, business interruption and the costs involved in keeping the business running.

This is why knowing what to expect makes the claims process so much easier.

A broker’s role is not only to report the claim, but also to help guide the process, explain what information may be required and assist with communication between the client, insurer, assessor and service providers.

The storm may pass.

But the recovery process may continue long after the weather has cleared.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗜𝘀 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝘁 𝗢𝗻𝗰𝗲

After floods, storms or disasters, claims systems come under pressure fast.

Assessors, repairers and suppliers are overloaded, which is why proper documentation matters.

Before cleaning or repairing:
✔ Take photos & videos
✔ Record damaged items
✔ Keep invoices & proof of ownership
✔ Document temporary repairs

A broker helps guide the process, ensure the correct information is submitted, and keep communication moving when the system is under pressure.

Because after a disaster, a claim is more than paperwork, it’s about getting your business back on its feet.

A flood doesn’t care what your policy schedule says.

The Eastern Cape has faced devastating floods before, and again we are seeing roads collapse, bridges washed away, vehicles overturned and businesses brought to a standstill.

The real risk is often not only the damage to your building or vehicle.
It’s the interruption afterwards.

* Suppliers can’t reach you
* Fleets can’t move
* Deliveries stop
* Staff can’t get to work
* Infrastructure fails

For many businesses, survival depends on more than repairing physical damage.

Insurance should never be treated as a document filed away once a year.
It should form part of your business continuity and risk planning.

Because risk usually builds quietly long before the storm arrives.

When assumptions are tested.
(Consequences without fear-mongering)

In transport and logistics, assumptions often hold until something goes wrong.

That’s usually the moment when contracts are examined, insurance responses are tested, and responsibility is questioned. What felt clear before the incident can quickly become uncertain once liability needs to be established.

Contingent exposure isn’t about expecting failure, it’s about understanding how responsibility may shift when arrangements are put under pressure.

Clarity before an incident often makes all the difference afterwards.

Outsourced Transport Structures & Responsibility
(Contingent exposure without Mislabelling)

In transport, liability doesn’t depend on labels like “owner-driver” or “subcontractor”.

It depends on how the transport is structured and where contractual responsibility sits.

When transport is outsourced, responsibility can shift back to the business that arranged the movement, especially if assumptions are made about insurance, contracts, or who carries the risk when something goes wrong.

Understanding the structure behind outsourced transport arrangements is key to identifying where unexpected liability can arise.
