What is debt review, really?

It is a legal process under the National Credit Act where a registered debt counsellor combines everything you owe into one reduced monthly payment you can actually afford, lowers your interest, and legally protects your car and home from repossession while you pay.

It is not blacklisting and it is not losing your assets. It is a court-backed way out of debt that ends with a clean record.

Did you know your bank is not your debt counsellor?

Many people believe they need to deal with each bank separately when they're struggling with debt. The truth is that debt review is managed by an independent debt counsellor who works with all your creditors to create one affordable repayment plan.

βœ… One Affordable Monthly Payment
βœ… We Deal With Your Creditors
βœ… Legal Protection Under Debt Review

Whether you bank with FNB, Absa, Standard Bank, Nedbank or Capitec, debt review can help simplify your finances and reduce the pressure of managing multiple debt repayments.

Don't try to negotiate with multiple banks on your own. Let an experienced debt counsellor guide you through the process.

"Will I lose my bank account under debt review?"

No. Your everyday transaction account stays open, your salary still goes in, and you bank as normal. It is your credit that changes:

Credit card and overdraft: frozen and restructured into one monthly payment.
Car finance and home loan: restructured AND protected, so the bank cannot repossess while your review is in good standing.

That protection is the entire point of debt review.

Here is exactly what FNB, Standard Bank, Absa, Nedbank and Capitec each do to your accounts:

Does your bank run your debt review? No.

Your bank (FNB, Standard Bank, Absa, Nedbank, Capitec) is a creditor, just like your store cards and car finance. Debt review sits above all of them and is run by an independent NCR-registered debt counsellor, not the bank.

That matters, because when a bank offers to "put you under debt review," you are free to choose your own counsellor instead. And a bank cannot refuse the process or keep chasing you once it is properly notified.

We wrote a plain-English guide to what each major bank actually does when you go under review, and what happens to your accounts:

Is your debt counsellor ignoring you? Emails unanswered, WhatsApp messages read but no reply, clearance certificate that never arrives?

You are not stuck. You have the legal right to transfer to a different NCR-registered debt counsellor, and it is usually free. Your court order continues, your debt review does not restart, and your protections stay in place. The old counsellor now has just 7 business days to release your file.

Tip: send one firm written escalation first (with a deadline and a mention of the NCR). If they still go quiet, transfer.

Under debt review and unhappy with your counsellor? The NCR has just confirmed your rights in writing.

The NCR's June 2026 guideline (004/2026) says you have an "absolute, unconditional" right to transfer to a different debt counsellor at any time, without a reason and without your current counsellor's permission. Key points: the transfer can't stay outstanding longer than 7 business days, your debt review does NOT restart, and you can't be charged fresh fees for work already paid.

Obstructing a transfer can now cost a counsellor their NCR registration.

Received a letter of demand or a Section 129 notice? Don't panic β€” but don't ignore it either.

Many people assume these letters are exactly the same. The truth is that one important difference could affect whether a creditor is allowed to take legal action against you.

A Section 129 notice is more than just a payment demand. It is a legal requirement that gives you rights and a limited window to act before court proceedings can begin.

In this carousel, we break down:
βœ”οΈ What a Letter of Demand is
βœ”οΈ What makes a Section 129 Notice different
βœ”οΈ Why the difference matters
βœ”οΈ What you can do next

The earlier you act, the more options you usually have.
