- The United States created 128,000 new jobs in October.
- The unemployment rate rose slightly to 3.6%.
- The Federal Reserve cut its benchmark interest rate by 0.25% for the third time this year. It is now 1.75%.
- The America economy grew by an annualised rate of 1.9% in the third quarter.

CHINA>
- Factory activity contracted for a sixth straight month.

HONG KONG>
- The economy contracted 3.2% in the three months to the end of September with civil unrest exacerbating the impact of weak Chinese demand.

UNITED KINGDOM>
- A general election was called for 12th December in an attempt to break the current ‘Brexit’ deadlock.

SAUDI ARABIA>
- The long-awaited IPO of Saudi Aramco is reportedly ready to be launched on Sunday 3rd November with trading to start in mid-December with a possible $2 trillion valuation.

The NASDAQ closed at a record high on Friday, as the other main US indices traded close to previous bests.

Close to 40% of S&P 500 companies have reported third-quarter earnings, of which 78% have beaten market expectations.

Tesla reported a net profit pf $143 million over the last quarter following losses of $1.1 billion in the first six months of the year. It also announced that it’s on track to launch its Model Y sport-utility vehicle next year with tests having been conducted at its new production factory in Shanghai.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s quarterly profits fell by 25% to $2.1 billion. Year-on-year sales rose 24% to $70 billion but shipping costs (mainly for its Prime members) increased 46% to $10 billion.

Twitter shares tumbled as quarterly profits of $37 million were significantly less than the market expected.

The IMF lowered its growth forecast for South Africa by 0.5% to just 0.7% for 2019, reflecting larger-than-anticipated labour strikes and weak agricultural production.

America lost its top spot to Singapore in the World Economic Forum’s annual competitiveness index. Hong Kong, the Netherlands and Switzerland were the other countries in the top 5.
