The harsh reality is: hunger is political and gendered. Today on , we are reminded that hunger is never only about food.
Through our collaborative Pots and Pens to Parliament research campaign in Cape Town, we saw and continue to see it on the ground, everyday and now more than ever.
The research is clear: Hunger acts as a direct driver of violence, while experiencing GBV makes women three times more likely to fall into severe food insecurity. It is a vicious, systemic cycle.
Our previous project has shown: Community kitchens are filling structural gaps left by austerity, unemployment, and unequal food systems. They offer emotional support, safer spaces and childcare.
๐ Letโs be clear: Community kitchens are not charity. They are frontline responses to systemic inequality.
Collectively community kitchens provide tens of thousands of meals every month, while simultaneously offering emotional support and crisis response under extremely difficult conditions.
A massive thank you to the Union Against Hunger network and all the community kitchens holding our societies together and bringing these messages to the streets today at
We are thrilled to be continuing this crucial research and advocacy project alongside our incredible partners.
