The theme for the 2026 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is “Resilience Starts at Home.”

In this short video, Mike Addison considers what the developing El Niño could mean for schemes in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape and some practical steps trustees and managing agents can take to reduce the risk of storm, flood, fire and wind damage.

A drier season does not necessarily mean a quiet claims season. One localised hailstorm, flood or fire can still cause extensive damage.

International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction - 13 October.

The 2026 theme is particularly relevant to community schemes “Resilience Starts at Home.”
With a strong El Niño developing, parts of South Africa could experience hotter and generally drier conditions, while remaining exposed to localised hailstorms, flash flooding, lightning, strong winds and fires.
Now is a good time for trustees and managing agents to consider:
• Are gutters, balcony outlets and stormwater drains clear?
• Have roofs, waterproofing and retaining walls been inspected?
• Is fire equipment serviced and accessible?
• Are trees and surrounding vegetation being managed?
• Are emergency contact details readily available?
• Are solar installations and replacement values correctly insured?
Insurance helps a scheme recover after an insured event, but reasonable preparation can prevent damage or reduce its severity.
