August focus: COFI Is Coming — What Does 'COFI Ready' Mean?

Three themes from your comments and DMs:

1. Many practices feel pressure to claim readiness early. Our position remains measured: COFI is a Bill, introduced April 2026, still progressing. Caution matters.

2. The most valuable conversations were operational, not legal: Where is information stored? How consistent are processes? Can we reconstruct history?

3. Evidence matters more than intention. The ability to demonstrate what happened — retrieval, communication history, responsibilities, status of activity — supports both continuity and client outcomes.

Thank you to everyone who read and challenged the blog.

September we move to: Scaling Without Losing Control — what usually breaks during growth, and when not to grow yet.

What operational question should we tackle there?

We started August by asking: is BRISCH COFI ready?

Our answer has been deliberately measured.

COFI was introduced in April and remains a Bill. The legislative process is still underway, so claiming certainty wouldn't serve practice owners well.

What the conversations this month have reinforced is something more practical.

The practices asking the best questions right now aren't asking "are we compliant for a future framework?"

They're asking:

Where does our client information actually live?
Can we see the history of a client relationship without relying on memory?
Where does work get stuck on the way through the practice?

Those are operational questions. Not compliance projects. And they're valuable to ask now, regardless of the final shape of COFI.

Thank you to everyone who read, commented and shared our August blog. You can still find it at brisch.co.za/blog — by Callie Strydom, Head of Commercial.

Note: This does not constitute compliance advice. COFI remains a Bill.

Final thought from our August blog:

The practices best positioned for regulatory change are likely to be those that already understand how work moves through their business, maintain reliable information, create clear accountability, and can demonstrate what happened throughout the client relationship.

Use these 6 questions this week:

1. Where is client information stored?
2. How consistently are processes followed?
3. How easy to reconstruct history?
4. Where reliance on memory?
5. Where handovers unclear?
6. Could you demonstrate outcomes?

Sensible business questions now, regardless of when COFI takes effect.

19/08/2026

So, is BRISCH COFI ready?

Our answer is deliberately measured.

What we can say is that we are actively following the development of COFI and considering what the direction of conduct regulation means for the advisory practices we support.

The operational principles at the centre of our work are already relevant to that conversation:

• Quality client data
• A clear history of client engagement
• Structured processes
• Defined responsibilities
• Reliable records

These are not guarantees of future regulatory compliance, nor are they a substitute for appropriate compliance advice. They are, however, strong operational foundations for a business that needs to adapt as regulatory expectations evolve.

That's where our conversation about COFI readiness begins.

From our August blog: COFI Is Coming

That is where the COFI conversation starts becoming relevant beyond the compliance function.

When workflows are consistent, communication is recorded, and responsibility is clear — you support both client outcomes and business resilience.

What we see in practice: When compliance feels heavy, it is rarely because requirements are excessive. More often, underlying processes are not designed to support them.

Yesterday we celebrated a very special milestone – 10 years of BRISCH.

Over the past decade, BRISCH has grown from an idea into a business supporting financial advisory practices every day – helping with the work behind the scenes so advisors can focus on their clients and their businesses.

There have been plenty of changes along the way, but one thing has stayed the same: our commitment to doing things properly, supporting our clients and continually finding better ways to work.

We couldn't have reached this milestone without the incredible people who have been part of the journey – our team, our clients, our partners and everyone who has supported BRISCH along the way.

Thank you for being part of our first 10 years.

Here's to the next chapter!

From the blog:

Start with client information.

Is it accurate? Is it complete? Can the appropriate people access it when they need it? Is there clarity about which record represents the most current information?

Then consider the history of the client relationship.

Can the practice understand what advice was provided, what communication took place, what actions followed, and where responsibility sat at different points?

As conduct regulation becomes increasingly focused on outcomes, the distinction between 'operations' and 'compliance' becomes less clear. The way work is executed can directly influence the experience and outcomes delivered to the client.

Where is client information stored in your practice today?
