16 years ago, I was a student at UCT GSB doing the AIM (Associate in Management) Course. At that time, we only had 1 internet café in which we sold refurbished computers. I had received a bursary from the IoD (Institute of Directors) that enabled me to pay for my tuition. Most of my classmates were coming from big businesses and government departments – the program was designed to assist Junior Managers with skills that will enable them to grow into a Senior Management role. Whenever I introduced myself, I used to say I run a Silulo Spaza shop and am studying so that I can build my empire.

The right education for small business is very important, especially when I reflect on the past. The UCT GSB played a huge role in shaping our thinking and propelling us in our vision. It is very important for all entrepreneurs who are ambitious and want to grow and scale their business to have the right kind of education. It is so encouraging to now see some of my classmates from those days pursuing a career in entrepreneurship. South Africa needs more businesses that are highly impactful and scalable.
