Last night, Western Cape Premier Alan Winde hosted a CEO Roundtable, organised by Wesgro, bringing together tourism industry leaders to help shape the next phase of tourism growth in Cape Town and the Western Cape.

Joined by Western Cape Provincial Minister of Finance, Deidré Baartman, and the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, Alderman James Vos, the Premier engaged with representatives from industry associations, airlines, public entities, township and village tourism, and the broader tourism value chain.

The discussion centred on a shared ambition: accelerating inclusive and sustainable tourism growth that delivers greater economic opportunities, supports job creation and ensures that communities across the province benefit from a growing visitor economy.

While demand for Cape Town and the Western Cape remains strong, unlocking further growth requires a coordinated approach that combines strategic demand creation, improved access and connectivity, investment in infrastructure and mobility, and the development of tourism experiences that strengthen destination readiness.

Through the Unlocking Tourism Growth project, Wesgro and its partners are developing a practical, industry-informed roadmap to identify the priority interventions, partnerships and collective actions needed to realise the destination’s full tourism potential.

A sincere thank you to all who joined the conversation. Your valuable insights will help shape this roadmap and strengthen the industry coordination needed to unlock the next phase of sustainable and inclusive tourism growth.

Wesgro’s trade mission to India continued in Mumbai with the SA-India Tourism, Trade & Investment Showcase, bringing together business leaders, investors, exporters, travel trade, and strategic partners to turn market access into tangible opportunities for tourism, trade, and investment.

Following a successful weekend of Made in the Cape in-store activations with Reliance Retail in Bengaluru, the focus in Mumbai shifted from the shelf to the boardroom, creating a platform for engagement, partnership development and business growth between the Western Cape and India.

The Showcase featured:

✅ Discussions on tourism, trade and investment opportunities between South Africa and India
✅ A dedicated B2B programme connecting Western Cape companies with Indian buyers, distributors and strategic partners
✅ Travel trade engagements showcasing Cape Town and the Western Cape as a premier destination for Indian leisure and business travellers
✅ A presentation by the Citrus Growers’ Association of Southern Africa, highlighting opportunities to grow agricultural exports and strengthen supply chain partnerships between our markets
✅ Remarks by Mr G. E. Labane, Consul General of South Africa in Mumbai, reaffirming the importance of deeper economic cooperation and stronger commercial ties between South Africa and India
✅ South African cricket legend Jonty Rhodes as Programme Director, guiding conversations and helping forge meaningful connections throughout the event

The opportunity is significant. Cumulative Indian investment into South Africa has reached approximately R40 billion since 2015. Indian travellers undertook an estimated 29 million outbound trips in 2025, with international leisure travel expected to continue grow strongly over the coming decade.

With visitors from India staying an average of 17.2 nights in South Africa, the Western Cape is well positioned to capture a greater share of this high-value market.

By leveraging strategic relationships and system-scale partners such as Reliance Retail, Wesgro is working to unlock new pathways to market while using Made in the Cape products to tell the story of place, showcase the province’s diverse export offering, and inspire future travel to Cape Town and the Western Cape.

A special thank you to Reliance Retail, Mr G. E. Labane and the South African Consulate General in Mumbai, Jonty Rhodes, the Citrus Growers’ Association of Southern Africa, our exporters, tourism partners and all stakeholders who contributed to the success of this mission.

What began with Reliance Retail’s participation in Wesgro’s Made in the Cape Buyers’ Programme is evolving into a powerful platform for market access in India.

Through this growing system-scale partnership, Made in the Cape brands, including Carmién Tea, Amka Clere, Nando’s, Ina Paarman’s and premium citrus products, were showcased to consumers in Bengaluru, creating new opportunities to reach buyers in one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing consumer markets.

Joined by South African cricket legend Jonty Rhodes, the activation connected Indian consumers with the quality, innovation and authenticity behind Made in the Cape products through tastings, demonstrations and direct engagement.

The campaign has delivered tangible commercial outcomes, resulting in 35 new product listings in Bengaluru, building on the 47 product listings secured through Wesgro’s Mumbai campaign last year. These listings provide Western Cape businesses with expanded access to Indian consumers through one of the country’s largest retail networks.

Importantly, this was about more than products. In line with Wesgro’s cross-selling approach, the activation also showcased the Western Cape’s tourism value proposition, linking the province’s food, flavours and brands to the destinations, experiences and people that make Cape Town and the Western Cape a world-class place to visit, invest and do business.

The collaboration with Reliance Retail demonstrates the value of system-scale partnerships in unlocking access to new markets, new buyers and new growth opportunities for Western Cape businesses, while strengthening trade, investment and tourism links between South Africa and India.

The mission now continues in Mumbai with the SA-India Trade, Investment & Tourism Showcase, advancing deeper economic collaboration and expanding opportunities for the Western Cape in one of the world’s most significant growth markets.

This week, Wesgro joined delegates from the Western Cape Government and the City of Cape Town for a site visit to Biovac’s new vaccine manufacturing facility, currently under construction in Cape Town.

The investment strengthens the Western Cape’s Life Sciences & Health sector, building advanced manufacturing capability and reinforcing the province’s position as a hub for biotechnology and innovation.

Since 2021, Biovac has secured and mobilised more than R4.5 billion in investment and funding commitments to expand its vaccine development and manufacturing capabilities in the province. The latest milestone is a US$180 million development finance commitment supporting the construction of the new facility, with work having commenced in January 2026.

Beyond the investment value, the impact is significant:

✅ The facility will provide end-to-end vaccine development and manufacturing capabilities, strengthening South Africa’s ability to produce vaccines locally and reducing reliance on imported supply.

✅ Biovac expects the new facility to increase its manufacturing capacity approximately threefold, creating a stronger platform for future growth and innovation.

✅ The company’s workforce is projected to grow to 741 employees by 2030, more than double its current complement, supporting the development of specialised skills and high-value employment within the sector.

✅ The investment reinforces Cape Town and the Western Cape’s growing position as a hub for biotechnology, health innovation and advanced manufacturing, with the potential for impact well beyond South Africa’s borders.

Wesgro is proud to support investments that advance Cape Town and the Western Cape’s Life Sciences & Health sector and contribute to a more resilient, innovative and globally competitive regional economy.

Tourism unlocks opportunity, connection and discovery. It supports local businesses, celebrates heritage, strengthens communities and creates pathways to shared prosperity. Central to the ambition of unlocking sustainable and inclusive tourism growth is creating opportunities for visitors to explore beyond the familiar, connecting them with the diverse cultures, communities and experiences found across the Western Cape.

From historic towns and heritage sites to local food, art, architecture and living heritage, the guide encourages visitors to experience the province in new ways through:

🗺️ Interactive maps
📍 Destination highlights
🧭 Curated itineraries
🎨 Cultural and creative experiences
📱 Downloadable digital assets

The guide spans the province’s six tourism regions, connecting travellers with local stories, businesses and experiences across the Cape Winelands, Cape West Coast (Weskus), Cape Overberg, Garden Route & Klein Karoo, Cape Karoo and Cape Town.

By helping visitors discover hidden gems and explore more of the province, the guide supports stronger regional dispersal, greater local economic participation and the development of tourism experiences that reflect the diversity of the Western Cape.
