This Women's Month, we celebrate our valued client, Women on Farms Project (WFP), a pioneering organisation that has spent nearly 30 years empowering women farm workers and dwellers across the Western and Northern Cape.

Established in 1996, WFP was founded in response to research that identified women farm workers as some of the most vulnerable and marginalised people in South Africa's agricultural sector. Since then, the organisation has become a powerful voice for women, helping them understand and exercise their labour, health, land, housing, and tenure rights while advocating for systemic and legislative change.

What started as small Women's Rights Groups on farms has grown into a movement that empowers women to stand together, challenge unfair labour practices, address gender-based violence, engage with local and national government, and advocate for safer and more dignified working conditions. Beyond rights education and advocacy, WFP has supported hundreds of women in establishing agroecological food gardens, improving household food security during seasonal periods of unemployment. Many participants have gone on to share produce within their communities, while others have generated much-needed income by selling surplus crops.

Their impact reaches beyond South Africa's borders. WFP has engaged with international stakeholders, including the European Parliament and European Commission, to raise awareness about harmful pesticides exported to South Africa and their impact on farm workers and communities. With a dedicated all-women team and almost three decades of service, WFP has empowered thousands of women to become confident leaders, community advocates, and agents of change. Their work has earned recognition through prestigious human rights and social justice awards, showcasing the vital role they play in advancing gender justice and economic empowerment in South Africa.
