Taking note of these few basic precautions could save your life – and the lives of others travelling on our country’s roads.

Safe driving checklist

● Plan your route and allow ample time for your journey.
● Check the weather and road conditions beforehand.
● Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy and check your spare tyre.
● Take regular breaks – every 200km, or two to three hours is
ideal.
● Avoid distractions (including your cellphone) while driving.
● Maintain a safe following distance from the car ahead of you.
● Keep your headlights on, even during the day for added visibility.
● Drive defensively and be aware of your surroundings.
● Hydration is important – ensure you have enough water in the vehicle.
● Adhere to the speed limit and overtake safely.
● Do not consume alcohol before or during your journey.
