Nobody teaches you how to ask for help with money. So most people don't, until it's an emergency.

Here's the truth: you don't need a crisis to start debt counselling. You need a moment where you're honest about where things stand.

For many South Africans, that moment is right now. Rising costs, stretched salaries, and accounts that quietly crept up over time.

We broke down why 2026 is shaping up to be a turning-point year for people ready to get on top of their debt, legally, properly, with a plan.

“Young people are not the problem that needs fixing. They are the economic potential that needs to be unlocked.”

This week on Stretching Rands Together, we sat down with Nthabiseng Moleko, Development Economist at Stellenbosch Business School and Chairperson of the National Empowerment Fund, to reframe the conversation about South Africa’s youth debt crisis.

In a country where almost 40% of new debt counselling clients are now under 35, Dr Moleko argues that we’ve been asking the wrong question all along. Youth debt, she argues, is not a story of personal failure. It’s a story of an economy that has yet to make room for its people.

From store cards replacing home loans, to trillions in institutional capital sitting idle. At the same time, young workers withdraw from their own retirement savings to cover groceries; this is one of the most important conversations we’ve published.

We are proud to share that our CEO, Damon Sivitilli, was featured in yesterday's Sunday Times - the Business Times section, South Africa's premier national business publication.

In the feature, Damon addresses a critical economic challenge: the alarming rate at which young South Africans are becoming financially overwhelmed before their careers even take off.

While frictionless online loans, retail credit, and credit card-linked apps have made spending effortless, the consequences are severe. An entire generation of our future workforce is entering adulthood heavily encumbered by debt, a systemic crisis that corporate South Africa can no longer ignore.

At Vantage Debt Management, we don't just observe market trends; we actively drive the solutions. This feature underscores our position as the trusted authoritative experts in financial rehabilitation and corporate debt solutions.

We pulled up a chair at Moneyweb. 🎙️

CEO Damon Sivitilli joined Simon Brown on MoneywebNow for an honest, no-fluff conversation about young South Africans, credit, and the financial pressure no one's really talking about.

It's a story playing out in homes across the country: graduates entering the workforce already in debt, families absorbing pressure they didn't see coming, and a generation being sold credit before they're taught how to manage it.
But it's not all heavy.

Damon also shared the small, practical shifts that Vantage offers freely to genuinely change things, the kind of advice that actually meets people where they are. If you're under 35 and in a difficult financial space, this one's worth your time.

Meet

Vantage challenged her to build a full hair care routine for just R500, and with hair as long and thick as hers, that’s no small ask.

Because let’s be honest, girl maintenance is one of the quietest budget-killers out there. A shampoo here, a conditioner there, a leave-in you couldn’t resist and suddenly you’ve spent double what you planned.

But Jolene shopped with intention, not impulse. One good shampoo, one nourishing conditioner, one leave-in, and she still came in under R500. If she can stretch it with all that hair, trust us, so can you.

If monthly debt repayments are making even the small things feel like a stretch, Vantage’s debt consolidation can help you pay less each month.
