Is your jewellery adequately insured?

Remember that jewellery needs to be covered under the All Risks section of one’s policy should your jewellery leave the premises on an ongoing basis. Cover provided under the All Risk Section provides world wide cover.

If your jewellery remains within your premises and never leaves the premises then same is covered under your household contents but only up to one third of your contents value. One needs to ensure one’s contents value is sufficient to cater for this else average will apply due to under insurance.

Jewellery of high value needs to have a valuation certificate, which can be obtained from a reputable jewellery store. The jewellery would be insured for its replacement value.

It is important to note that the valuation certification must be dated prior to the loss to prove the value and ownership and should be updated every year.

The value of jewellery can be impacted by the exchange rate of the rand against foreign currencies and the gold price.
