Don’t buy insurance based on price alone.

Everyone loves saving money, but when it comes to insurance, the cheapest premium can sometimes lead to an expensive outcome.

A broker’s job, isn’t simply to find the cheapest premium, it’s to make sure you have the right cover when you need it most.

A policy with hidden exclusions, high excesses or limited benefits may save you a few Rand every month, but could cost you thousands when a claim is rejected or only partially paid.

Do not automatically accept help from the first tow tuck that arrives at the scene.

You should:

1. Contact your insurer or roadside assistance first

2. Use only a tow truck authorised by your insurance company or dealership

3. Never sign paperwork you do not understand

4. Ask where the vehicle is being taken before agreeing

Watch out for common scam tactics:
Be cautious if someone:

1. Insists you use a specific panel be**er

2. Pressure you to settle privately immediately

3. Claims that “your insurance already approved this”

4. Tries to separate you from your vehicle paperwork or keys

You should:

1. Contact your insurer or roadside assistance first
2. Use only a tow truck authorised by your insurance company or dealership
3. Never sign paperwork you do not understand
4. Ask where the vehicle is being taken before agreeing

If you do not make use of the dedicated roadside assistance provided by your insurers, your insurer is only obligated to pay the policy limit allocated for unauthorised towing.
