NEIGHBOURHOOD GEM OF THE WEEK:
LITERACY UNLIMITED

This week’s gem is Literacy Unlimited, a fantastic non-profit based in Pointe-Claire, Montreal, dedicated to improving adult literacy in the West Island and surrounding areas—from Verdun to the Ontario border. Since 1981, they’ve empowered adults through personalized tutoring, family literacy programs, senior initiatives, and community partnerships. In 2023, Literacy Unlimited received the Community Service Award from the West Island of Montreal Chamber of Commerce!

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Julia Asselstine-Gelinas, their Executive Director, whose passion and dedication truly shine's. She shared the rich history of this incredible organization and its deep impact on our community. Did you know 48% of Canadian adults (aged 16-65) have literacy skills below Level 3? That’s nearly half of our population facing literacy challenges.

Looking ahead, Julia and the Literacy Unlimited team have exciting plans: expanding their network through a new ambassador program, hosting special guest speakers, starting an after-school workshop series, and launching a new, gamified literacy program to make learning more fun and engaging!

I highly recommend reaching out to Julia or visiting their website (linked below) to see how you can support this vital cause. Every contribution helps! Did you know a 1% increase in literacy can boost GDP by 3%? Improved literacy also benefits mental wellness, reduces ER visits, and combats elderly isolation. Literacy is the foundation of a more inclusive and productive society.

NEIGHBOURHOOD GEM OF THE WEEK:
Coldpow.

This week’s gem is Cold Pow Juice, an exciting juicing company launched in 2020 by two powerhouse women, Arielle Levine and Elisa Alarie right here in Montreal. As they like to say, they didn’t just create a juicing company—they crafted Cold Pow with one mission: making healthy living simple, convenient, and delicious.

After many trial-and-error attempts, Cold Pow has perfected and launched three amazing juice options: Kale Krush, Berry Boom & Vanilla Vibes. But they’re just getting started! Over the next 12 months, they’re aiming to introduce a 4th product, expand their customer base to the US, and open their very own office!

Who are the mastermind behind scenes? Arielle brings over a decade of experience in product development and marketing in the food industry, while Elisa, a Certified Health Coach, has 7+ years in nutrition and previously owned a cold-pressed juicing company.

Why are they our gem? Their customer service is top-notch, their juices are dietician-approved, and they’re committed to giving back. They’re even trying to partner with RBC Dominion Securities to promote wellness and health through upcoming events!

Know another business or individual making a difference? Tag them below or send me a message—they could be next week’s Gem

NEIGHBOURHOOD GEM OF THE WEEK:
Summit School - École le Sommet’s awake the potential Golf Tournament

This event which was held at the Club de golf WindMill Heights raised over $200,000, and holds a special place in my heart. By supporting this tournament, you are not just playing golf—you’re making a direct impact on the lives of neurodiverse youth by promoting education, advocacy, and employment initiatives right here in our city.

Summit School is a pillar of inspiration for children with special needs and learning disabilities, and it has a deeply personal connection for me. My younger sister, who has autism, attended Summit School, and the incredible progress she made there is something I'll forever be grateful for. They helped her accomplish things I once thought were out of reach, and for that, I’m beyond thankful.

A HUGE shoutout to everyone who made this event a success, whether by donating, playing, or volunteering—you all made a difference! My partner Mathieu Canuel our colleague McRae and I had a blast volunteering at the tournament, and we were honored to be a part of it.

Special thanks to Robert Collette, Todd Hsu Michael Coyle, Jesse Heffring and many more behind the scenes who organized such an amazing event. Your hard work and dedication made it all possible!

Lastly, we’d love to hear from you! Do you know a small business, charitable organization, or an individual making a difference in our community? Tag them in the comments below or send me a message, and they could be our next Gem of the Week!

NEIGHBOURHOOD GEM OF THE WEEK:
Marvens Restaurant

This week’s Gem of the Week is extra special—it’s a suggestion from my friend Seema Jani and a shout-out to a close friend’s family-run restaurant: Marven's Restaurant!

A true community staple since 1973, Marven's has been a go-to spot for delicious greek food such as lamb chops, Montreal’s best calamari, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. But Marven's is more than just amazing food; it’s about heart.
The Kostopoulos family, who took over in 1973, has been serving up kindness along with their meals, regularly donating free food baskets to churches and helping those less fortunate in our community.

So, next time you’re in the mood for a great meal, why not visit Marven's? Not only will you enjoy a fantastic dining experience, but you’ll also be supporting a restaurant that gives back to the community. Say hi to Tony Kostopoulos for me!

Do you know a small business, organization, or individual making a difference in the community? Drop their name in the comments—we’d love to feature them as our next Gem of the Week

NEIGHBOURHOOD GEM OF THE WEEK
The Stone Doctors

This week, we're shining a spotlight on an incredible group that brings together music, medicine, and a passion for giving back to the community – The Stone Doctors. Formed in 2001, this unique band has an interesting origin, with two of its members being surgeons and another holding a PhD. They perform electrifying covers of the legendary Rolling Stones, blending their love for rock ‘n’ roll with a deep commitment to charitable causes.

Recently, we had the pleasure of attending their concert at the Mayfair, a well-known tavern in Pointe-Claire. What made this event truly special was that all proceeds were dedicated to supporting WIAIH, a local community charity that has been providing essential services to people with intellectual disabilities and autism for over 65 years. The Stone Doctors have consistently used their talents to make a difference, having raised over $400,000 for various charities over the years.

Let's celebrate The Stone Doctors for their unwavering dedication to both music and philanthropy. Their work exemplifies how passion can be turned into a powerful force for good.

We invite you to share the businesses, individuals, or local charities you believe are making a difference. We’d love to highlight their efforts in future posts.

Neighborhood Gem of the Week:
SYDs Garage

We’re thrilled to spotlight Syd’s Garage and its dedicated owner, Everton, as our Gem of the Week. Syd’s Garage shines not only for its top-notch customer service but also for its remarkable community involvement. Partnering with LaSalle Caribbean Restaurant, they deliver food baskets to 20 families each year, with a goal to increase that number to 30 by the end of this year.

If you're due for an oil change or tire rotation, stop by Syd’s Garage—where they keep your car running smoothly and your community thriving. Everton Campbell and his team truly prove that a little grease goes a long way in making a difference!

Please help us spread the word about this incredible business. And if you know a business, association, or individual making a significant impact in our community, leave a comment—we’d love to highlight them next!

Neighbourhood Gem of the Week
Coda

This week's highlight hits close to home for me, as I've had multiple loved ones affected by cancer. Today, I'm thrilled to introduce you to the CODA team, an inspiring group of medical students making a big impact in partnership with the Fondation québécoise du cancer & the Canadian Cancer Society. With branches in 12 academic institutions, including every faculty of medicine in Quebec, these students are on a mission to support cancer patients and their loved ones, raise awareness, and fundraise.
Their incredible projects include:
✨ The CODA Gala
✨ The Ribbon Campaign
✨ The Teddy Bear Clinic - in collaboration with the Centre universitaire de santé McGill - McGill University Health Centre

Currently, they’re working tirelessly to expand their Chit Chat Program, where trained volunteers offer direct psychosocial support to cancer patients. So far, they've raised over $110,000 ! But as I learned from a chat with CEO & Co-founder Omar Toubar, they’re far from done and have big goals ahead.

Given that so many of us have been touched by cancer in some way, I have a little non-medically approved prescription for you: visit their website https://teamcoda.org/ and share their mission. Let's spread the word about this phenomenal team and help them continue their amazing work!

Neighborhood Gem of the week
Lord William Pub

This weeks Gem of the Week is a special one, I’ve yet to meet someone who does more for the community than Joseph Pilotte and his team at the Lord William Pub group.

To highlight their involvements in the community, here’s a couple of things they do: Annual donations to Share the Warmth / Partageons l'espoir. They host poker tournaments where all the proceeds go to the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as well as the GOAL initiatives foundation and lastly they deliver food baskets around the holidays to at least 50 families.

I encourage you all to leave a comment naming a business/Association you believe deserves to be highlighted. As well as to go and have your next cold one at one of Joe’s pubs, Lord William or Ye Old Orchard.
